Read moreI have been to all pools of Reykjavik and most other pools in the surrounding area. Vesturbæjarlaug is along with the pool in Seltjarnarnes my favorite. Mostly because of the good atmosphere and vibe. Especially in the evenings when it’s dark and the charming lights are on. It’s a local pool with a nice mixture of locals from all ages, sizes and backgrounds in combination with a reasonable amount of tourists.
The pool has a long history and the building and interior represent that. Although it can be crowded at specific hours, the (men’s) changing room is large enough and very rarely I have to queue up for the mandatory (nude!!) shower. There is a nice variety of pools with all different temperatures. The steam room is nice and strong. The main pool is large enough for serious laps.
The pools outside are generally pretty clean, although I think the ‘shower police’ of the past should be reintroduced again. The entrance price is fair, but if you think you’ll come more often you can buy a 10 of 20 rounds card and you get a huge discount. These cards can also be used for many more pools...

The woman on reception went through what to do.. very friendly You go into the changing rooms and remove your shoes and place in the rack. Get unchanged and place all you clothes in a locker and take your towel and shorts ( in my case) with you.
They is another rack by the showers for your you to leave your towel etc. You then have a shower Yes your are naked ..remember your in iceland😀. Shower gel is provided.
Then enjoy the pools We did a bit of lane swimming first. . Lanes to suit all abilities
There are several other pools/ spa pools at varying temperatures starting at 6-12 degrees, right up to 42 degrees.. There is also a sauna. Hot hot hot.😀😂😂
It was minus 0.5 when we were there , with a bit of a wind chill , but you didn’t notice it . Except when you changed pools.
