One of the most interesting and well-laid out museums I've ever visited.

My wife and I went as sort of a joke, as there is not much to do in Siglufjörður, other than soak in the amazing scenery (which is a perfectly fine thing to do). However, we went in with open minds and were fully absorbed by the story of how herring fishing shaped the history of this little village.

The museum is very interactive and immerses you in the time of the herring industry's heyday. Tons of real items, such as boats, tools, clothing, equipment, records, etc. along with well-written accounts of the history, events, people, and artifacts make this museum a worthy investment of time.

The museum is laid out in 3 or 4 buildings, each with it's own role to represent in the story. The cost is reasonable, and the time spent about an...

Siglufjörður is a lovely village, and the museum is even interesting to just walk around outside. We didn't realize we should call ahead when we were there in October 2021, partially because we just decided on the spur of the moment to go north from Akureyri and see what was up north. We were so glad we did this side trip. Although the museum was closed the day we were there, the lady who answered the phone was very apologetic and let us know why they couldn't give us a tour. But there's honestly some interesting plaques to read outside, and many buildings and objects from the Herring Era are outside, so you can see some of them even if you can't get inside the museum.

Highly recommend calling ahead and checking out the museum, and the town of Siglufjörður itself with its...

Full transparency: I wasn't interested in learning about Herring however, I was absolutely amazed and enthralled by the history and industry Siglufjordur built around catching, preparing and shipping Herring around the world! There are three buildings you get to visit to see where all the hard work and sleeping courters (for the women) are. Here's a pro tip: in the 1st building where you purchase the tickets go up the front steps and to the right is a room with a video in English that explains everything you need to know before you continue on in your journey to learn all about how important Herring was to Siglufjordur. I promise it will make the whole experience enjoyable and easier to understand how the other buildings connect to the story. I highly recommend this museum...

We took a tour that included time at these museums as part of the trip. I have to confess - this was not something we were particularly interested in and expected it to just be a 10 minute bore...boy, were we WRONG. This place was GREAT - there are multiple buildings, lovingly maintained and curated to give you a great feel of the main industry in Iceland many years ago - this covers the living conditions, the work, the boats (they have multiple actual boats hidden in one of the buildings), the fish preparation, and more. The owners was there and was very friendly and they have nice restroom facilities. Overall, we were all blown away and really enjoyed it and wished we could have had MORE time to spend here. Excellent museum - don't miss it!!!
