The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, commonly known as Samba Kovil or simply the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, is a historic Roman Catholic church in Puducherry, Tamil Nadu. Located on Mission Street in the heart of the White Town area, near Bharathi Park and about 1 km from the Puducherry Beach promenade, it’s a key landmark reflecting the region’s French colonial past. Built by Jesuit missionaries, its origins trace back to 1692, though the current structure was completed in 1791 after multiple reconstructions due to destruction by Dutch forces in 1693 and British occupation in 1761. It serves as the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore, established in 1770. The cathedral showcases Portuguese architectural influences with a white-and-yellow façade, arched windows, and a prominent bell tower topped with a cross. Inside, it features a high-vaulted ceiling, ornate altars, and statues of saints, including a revered statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception brought from France. The design blends European elegance with local adaptations, evident in its simple yet striking layout. A notable feature is the annual feast on December 8, marked by a car procession and vibrant celebrations, drawing devotees from across South India. Open daily from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 8:30 PM, Mass timings are 6:15 AM (Tamil) and 5:30 PM (Tamil) on weekdays, with additional Sunday services at 7:00 AM (English) and 5:30 PM (Tamil). Entry is free, though donations are appreciated. The cathedral’s location makes it easily accessible—500 meters from the Puducherry Bus Stand, 2 km from the railway station, and 150 km from Chennai International Airport (3-4 hours by road). Winter (October-March) is the best time to visit for comfortable weather. A stone’s throw from Puducherry’s French Quarter, this cathedral offers a serene contrast to the bustling Sacred Heart Basilica (2.5 km away). It’s a must-visit for its historical depth, architectural charm, and spiritual significance in South India’s Catholic heritage.

Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Puducherry is a 300-year-old mother church for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. Its beautiful white and blue color scheme with golden accents coupled with a mix of Herrian, French, and Portuguese style architecture makes it a site worth visiting at least once. The church is also known as Samba Kovil, which is a phonetic corruption of "Saint Paul's Kovil" where "Kovil" means church. It is one of the oldest tourist sites in Puducherry and was visited by Mother Teresa during her visit to Puducherry. The Church consists of a choir loft, bell tower, an intricately redesigned esplanade (open space), and a splendid display of colors. The colors inside the Church make you fall in love with it repeatedly. The Church lies close to Promenade beach, surrounded by green avenues and landscaped gardens. Its stunning architecture, rich history, and welcoming atmosphere make it a must-see destination for anyone interested in exploring the cultural and religious heritage of Pondicherry.

A serene & beautiful cathedral. The calmness, the vast expanse, the imposing edifice, the magnificent façade, the echoing chants of the devouts attending the mass, the multicoloured vitrines that amplify the divine light, the list is endless! An ancient church of the Catholics, it has also contributed to the name of the street (Rue de la cathédrale), adding only to the French history & flavour of this unique coastal town of South India. Come Christmas season, the entire cathedral area transports you to an exotic experience: the environ breathes the festivity. The A to Z for the X-mas decorations are sold on the pavements surrounding the church. A treat to the eyes, indeed. A landmark in Pondicherry that a tourist won't miss & a cherished religious structure for the local Catholics, the 'Samba Kovil' as addressed by the native Pondicherrians, the Cathérale has stood through centuries, watching generations come and go by.

The Jesuit Fathers in the 1692 (with the finance from Louis XIV, king of France) erected the first church which was demolished by the Dutch in the following year. A second Church was quickly built in 1699 but could not last long. In 1736 a large church was built on the site of the present Cathedral. This third church was razed to the ground by the British in 1761. In 1770 work on the present cathedral was started on the foundations of the 3rd Church. In 1791 the main work was finished. The Bell tower, etc were built later. At present this is the cathedral mother church for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. The church is also known as Samba Kovil in Tamil. English Mass is celebrated on Sundays at 6.15 pm.
