The Mahatma Gandhi Statue in Pondicherry is a remarkable tribute to the Father of the Nation, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Dating back to 1965, the statue was crafted by the renowned artist, Roy Choudhary, an alumnus of the Government College of Art and Crafts in Chennai, Madras. The construction of this magnificent statue took nearly a year, and on 26th January 1965, it was officially inaugurated and made accessible to the public. Standing at a height of 13 feet (4 meters), it commands attention directly opposite the historic Old Port Pier in Pondicherry.

Previously, there was a tunnel beneath the statue that provided a direct passage to Gingee Fort. However, due to unfortunate incidents resulting in suffocation-related deaths, access to the tunnel was closed to the public.
