Construction was started in 1606 but was finished only in 1627, because a fire destroyed the building in 1620. It took 15 years to rebuild. It is Goa's only convent for nuns. It used to house around 150 cloistered nuns who were called the daughters of St. Monica. The Church and the Convent of St Monica is acclaimed as the first nunnery of the East. The Convent has a vast courtyard with a cloister and its three storeys have numerous cells and halls.

Weeping cross ✝️, which as per the plaque speak about a time when the cross wept tears of blood
Also famous art forms used to decorate the church wall can be seen here which are native art of Goan artisan - Carvy - red oxide paint which is applied over white lime plaster
Then also one can witness near the main high altar, the sides decorated with porcelain tile with embroidered design of vivid colours Back in the days this must have been a marvel
Sanata Monica is the mother of St Augustine, founder of the augustainin religious order which are knot for their works in the central Asian region
The external support buttresses are designed in such a way that they create arches at the entry church
This has to be done so that the road ahead leads ahead to another historic and renowned catholic monument

The convent was sanctioned in 1598. Building started in 1606 after the then Bishop Aleixo de Menezes laid down the foundation stone. Construction was completed in 1627.
It is famous for its fortress-like structure with thick walls and buttresses and high ceilings. There is a huge courtyard with a cloister. The building stands 3 stories tall with numerous cells and halls. The outer walls have massive standing buttresses as well.
