The best experience that we had during our recent trip to Mangalore was a visit to Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village near the town of Manipal. Surprisingly neither the hotel where we stayed nor the usual travel websites like Tripadvisor or Thrillophilia include it in their recommended spots for sight-seeing. In my view, it should be right at the top as I have not seen anything like this ever. I chanced upon a reference to this place through a Youtube vlog called the "Travel Vlog IV" by a person named Ivana, where she mentioned this place as one that's not to miss. This village has been built over 6 acres of land and it includes 23 reconstructed houses and other structures that belong to a time period between 1216-1912. Not only these are masterpieces from architectural perspective, but the detailing of each wall, floor, ceiling and furniture can only be viewed as a humongous artistic endeavour. As soon as you enter a house, you would hear a classical song or an instrument being played in the background matching with the locale from where the structure originally came. All these elements together would transport you back in history to those days when people used to live in that house. It's literally mesmerizing. The man behind this superhuman mission was Vijayanath Shenoy, a banker from Udupi, whose passion was to devote his time, energy and money in the restoration and popularization of architectural and cultural heritage. He built the first house for his own residential purpose in 1984 by reusing the relics of demolished houses. That received a lot of attention from within India and abroad. When he saw a steady stream of visitors, he decided to embark upon the mega project. Later, in one of the interviews he mentioned that - “I love houses in which six or seven generations once lived and breathed, designed not by architects but by people themselves—in line with their needs, social requirements, and the climate.” It took nearly 20 years to complete the work (1997-2016). Although initially the funding support was limited, eventually that support came from the Finnish, the Norwegian Government and the Indian Government.

Live museum showcasing traditional South Indian housing architecture across 24 authentically re-constructed houses. A must visit! The Hasta Shilpa Heritage village features around 24 real houses built true-to-original design principles. They’ve been built using ancient construction methodologies. Each house features household items and artefacts highlighting the daily life. The first house also houses the ticket counter. Tickets cost ₹300 with a 50% discount for seniors. There’s a PDF document available that describes each house in detail. An audio tour is being developed. There’s ample parking at the entrance. Flash photography isn’t allowed and no touching of artefacts. Make sure to spare at least 4 hours to cover each house in detail. The detail in each house will amaze you for sure. Washrooms are clean and there are two of them. One at the entrance and another in the middle of the tour. Drinking water is provided as well. Make sure to pack an umbrella if you’re planning an afternoon visit. Best time to visit is at 10am when the museum opens. Place is not ideally suited for senior citizens because it’s a long and exhausting tour through all 24 houses. Make sure to take enough breaks and stay hydrated. There are ample places to sit and relax in the houses. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the Udupi area!

Vijaynath Shenoy, retired banker, heritage conservationist, antiques collector and creator of Hasta Shilpa, Manipal. Two eyes nor two hours are enough to see the marvellous beauty of the structures. If you r a history lover, then this is a must visit place for you. Though the ticket price is 300, its much worth than it. The Village trust is a seven-acre plot with 26 immaculately restored centuries-old houses and museums devoted to crafts, Tanjore paintings, objects from the south Indian mercantile trade, and Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings. It opened up to the public on May 9, 2016. Heritage Village was built with public funding, including aid from the Finland, Denmark Norwegian embassies. Among elegant old structures to be found there are a 400-year-old Bunt Guthu House, the 500-year-old Kamal Mahal (which once belonged to a vassal king of the Vijayanagar empire), monasteries that once housed followers of Advaita and Veerashaiva faiths and a century-old trading house-cum-residence. The helpers were kind enough to give information about the structures.

Hasta Shilpa is the most unexpected place in all of Manipal or say Udupi. I never expected a coastal town to have the most secured cultural heritage and that too is maintained beautifully. I had the opportunity to meet with Sushant and Mr Harish(one of the original team members to establish this entire village museum). They have great real stories to tell and most unheard and positive experiences of life, we were fortunate to cross paths with them and have a deep conversation about how the entire setup was created. Culturally it covers most of habitat from different centuries and decades within, original houses were deranged and rearranged here, all of that took 20 years and are still ongoing by the trust. If you really would like to know how different religious communities used to have their households and their market areas and unique architecture and artefacts, please visit and support.

This is a must visit when in Mangalore. Manipal is an hour away from Mangalore. This visit can be clubbed with Udupi Krishna temple and beaches on the way. This is ticketed. 350/- per person. Students get it for 150/- for which you need your student identity. It's a beautiful venue with many heritage buildings and antiques. There is an audio guide available with an app on the phone. The guide gives us a better perspective. Drinking water is available on the premises and toilets are also very clean. This can be done even during the day when it is hot as once you are inside the palaces and homes you escape the heat. To see this place in leisure you have to keep aside atleast 3 hours. Better to go post lunch or after a heavy breakfast as there are no options for food here. It's educational and gives us a window to the past. Great place for photo enthusiasts as well. A must visit.
