"Tagore Park" is located on the top of a hill called "Bavuta Gudde " in the center of Mangaluru city which has witnessed a united struggle of the farmers in 1834 for the independence of our country .On 5th April, 1834,thousands of people entered "Bavuta Gudde " hills lowered British flag and hoisted local Flag by chasing away the British army and administration staff, seized British treasury and offices, controlled the local Administration for 13 days. By that time, more British army arrived from Malabar area and dethroned the farmer's administration by cunning ways. Many local heroes lost their life, many were hanged by the British culy slaves,many were taken hostage, many were jailed for life. The struggle against British was organized by leaders like Kedambady Ramayya Gowda,Guddemane Appayya Gowda, Aparampara etc .They started their march from Sullia and reached Mangaluru through Bellare,Puttur and Bantawal .On the way, thousands joined the " dandu" (= procession) voluntarily and they destroyed British offices and slaves. This historical event of 1834 is known as " Kalyanappana Katakayi " and considered as a rehearsal for the "First War of Independenc" of 1857. The Light House Hill garden has a garden besides the light house, from where the tourists can enjoy a marvelous view of the sea with moving boats and ships adding on to its serene beauty. One can see the beautiful sea view, sunset view and also the sailing ships and boats on the sea.
This beautiful garden is newly renovated.There is also a small artificial stream that flows down a rock strewn channel. There is a public library at the base of the light house with a reading room named after Karnad Sadashiv Rao, a renowned freedom fighter. This garden is very close to St. Aloysius Chapel and can be visited together.
