Mammiyoor Sri Mahadeva Temple is situated in trichur district, chavakkad taluk in Guruvayoor known as the temple city. It is one kilometer away from the famous Guruvayoor Srikrishna Temple. Mammiyoor Sri Mahadevan is also known as โMammiyoorappanโ among the devotees. It is one of the 108 famous Shiva temples in Kerala. This is the must visit place for the devotees coming to take darshan of Guruvayoor Srikrishna temple. In fact while at Srikrishna temple, after taking darshan of bhagavathi (upadevatha prathishta at Guruvayoor) devotees offer prayer to Mammiyoorappan (looking at the direction of Mammiyoor Sri Mahadeva Temple).
It is believed that Mammiyoor Sri Mahadeva idol (vigraham) was placed by Parasuraman (one of Vishnuโs avatharam). The vigraham is installed in the concept of โUmamaheshwaran) Parvathi Devi on the left side. There is a shrine of Lord Vishnu also here. The sub deities are Ganapathi, Subramanian, Ayyappa, Goddess Kali and Serpent deities. The special festival celebration here are conducted on Mahashivaratri and Ashtami Rohini.
For us this temple is a must visit place during our vacation. We were based in Dubai for over three decades and during our vacation we always visit Guruvayoor Srikrishna Temple, Mammiyoor Sri Mahadeva Temple and Kadampuzha Bhagavathi Temple apart from the temples and Kavs in and around our house. Although we had a temple in Dubai (respect to the Rulers of the country) we are comfortable over here for prayers in our style. My both daughters learnt the temple rituals and the likes by visiting temples here. When we visit Guruvayoor Temple we used to stay at Sunrise Lodge from its inception. It is located at East Nada and the owner Mr. Chandran is a friend of mine from Dubai and it has A/c rooms. He was the owner of Sunrise Supermarket in Dubai which was a must go place for us on weekends to buy groceries and other items. Now he is back in India and since his children who are educated from International colleges are not interested to run grocery supermarket and thus it is closed.
Coming back to Mammiyoor Sri Mahadeva Temple, when we visited a couple of days back, we found the temple is under renovation. For us it is a nostalgic place as we have lot of childhood memories of our daughters since this temple was a must visit place for us if not twice at least once a year during vacation.
I pray Mammiyoorappan to give peace and prosperity all who visit this temple. Also requesting all devotees coming to Guruvayoor Srikrishna Temple to visit Mammiyoor Sri...

Nestled in the heart of Guruvayur, Kerala, the Mammiyur Sri Mahadeva Temple stands as a testament to ancient legends and divine interventions. This revered Shiva temple, also known as Mammiyoor or Mammiyur Mahadeva Temple, is steeped in a fascinating history that intertwines with the establishment of the famous Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple.
The story of Mammiyur Temple begins in the twilight of the Dwapara Yuga. According to legend, as the great deluge submerged Lord Krishnaโs abode of Dwaraka, the divine child was found floating on a banyan leaf amidst the surging waters. It was then that Devaguru Brihaspathi (Jupiter) and Vayu (the wind god) discovered him. Lord Krishna entrusted them with his personal idol, instructing them to consecrate it at an appropriate location on Earth. Guru and Vayuโs celestial quest led them to the banks of Rudratheertha, a sacred lake where Lord Shiva had been engrossed in deep meditation for ages. Recognizing their divine purpose, Lord Shiva magnanimously offered his meditation spot for the installation of Lord Krishnaโs idol. This selfless act of Lord Shiva earned the place the name โMahimayur,โ signifying his greatness (Mahima). Over time, Mahimayur evolved into โMammiyurโ.
The site where Guru and Vayu consecrated Lord Krishnaโs idol became known as Guruvayoor, while the location Lord Shiva chose for himself and his consort Sree Parvathy became Mammiyur. This divine relocation established a spiritual connection between the two temples, making them inseparable in the pilgrimage tradition. Today, the Mammiyur Sri Mahadeva Temple is renowned as one of the 108 famous Shiva temples in Kerala. It is also counted among the five important Shiva temples surrounding Guruvayoor, each representing one of the five faces of Shiva. The templeโs unique feature is the presence of both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu in separate sanctum sanctorums, making it the only temple in Kerala where both deities are worshipped with equal status.
As time passed, the legend of Mammiyur Temple grew, and it became an integral part of the Guruvayur pilgrimage. Devotees believe that their spiritual journey remains incomplete without paying homage to Lord Shiva at Mammiyur after visiting the Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple. This belief has cemented Mammiyurโs place in the hearts of pilgrims and ensured its continued significance in Keralaโs rich tapestry of...
