Dhakuria Lake, popularly known as the Rabindra Sarobar, is a man-made lake and the second largest water body of Kolkata. It is considered a major ecological reserve of the city. The land is covered by the lake and comprises of gardens, parks, trees, shrubs, auditoria, and jogger’s strip. There is a significant population of various varieties of fish on the lake however, fishing is prohibited. There are many activities organized for families during the weekends or holidays at Rabindra Sarobar that one can indulge in on a regular basis. Visitors meditate at the sunrise point and offer morning prayers to the sun.

Visitors can row in the lake waters and engage in kayaking, water ballet, and regatta. The rowing clubs associated with the Rabindra Sarobar are Bengal Rowing Club, Calcutta Rowing Club, and the Lake Club, which keep organizing rowing events every now and then. There are swimming classes arranged here at the lake as well. The gardens of Rabindra Sarobar are home to several migratory birds, especially during the winters, and it is a birder’s paradise.

For wildlife or bird photography enthusiasts, winter is the best time to be around to catch hold of birds like brown-breasted flycatchers, pin-tailed snipe, blue-throated blue catchers, and brahminy starlings. The stone-paved jogging strip encircles the Rabindra Sarobar Lake Park gardens, making it a fantastic destination for a waterfront run. There is a museum inside the premises of the lake called Thakur-der-gallery, literally translating to Gallery of the Gods because this museum houses some of the award-winning Durga idols of Kolkata.
