The Prithvi Theatre is a subsidiary of the Shri Prithviraj Kapoor Memorial Trust & Research Foundation, a registered public charitable trust, designed to be non-profit entity depending on the patronage of individuals and Corporates committed to the development of the performing and fine arts.

The Trust was set up in 1975 in memory of Prithviraj Kapoor, by Shashi and Jennifer Kapoor, to achieve the following aims:

To promote professional theatre, Hindi theatre primarily, and nurture a loyal and discerning audience for the same.

To provide a well equipped and well managed theatre space, available to performing artists at a subsidised rate. The economics are designed to benefit the artist; the entire ticket collection goes to them and they in turn make a small contribution to the Trust toward running costs.

To provide subsidised rehearsal and workshop spaces.

To subsidise and promote education in the arts for aspiring and deserving stage artists, technicians, researchers, etc.

To create a performing arts resource centre and research library (under construction).

To provide medical and educational assistance to theatre workers and their children.

To develop and inspire a community of art practitioners and patrons, where everyone feels welcome, irrespective of class/caste/creed/colour.

After 40 years and counting, we are proud to curate and host over 640 shows annually, averaging 85% audience attendance. Furthermore, we are proud of the incredible list of award winning performing artists who have "walked the boards" of our stage and to have provided an early and crucial platform for fresh emerging talent.
