Pashan Devi Temple – Nainital

Here’s a comprehensive overview of the Pashan Devi Temple in Nainital, Uttarakhand — including location, history, significance and travel-tips.

📍 Location

The temple is located at “Tallital”, Nainital – address often given as Tallital, Nainital, Uttarakhand 263002, India.

It is close to the lakeside and the “Thandi Sadak” route (which runs beside the lake) in the Nainital area.

For reference: From the nearest major railway station (Kathgodam) it is about 9.35 km according to one listing.

🕉 Historical & Cultural Significance

The temple is known as one of the older shrines in the Nainital region.

The deity is referred to as “Pashan Devi” (literally the “Stone Goddess”) and is worshipped as a manifestation of the Nav Durga (nine forms of Goddess Durga).

The temple structure is described as a “complete stone structure” and the goddess is in stone form.

Some local beliefs:

There's an “Akhand Jyoti” (eternal flame) lit since the formation of the temple.

Devotees offer water to the goddess, cloth/sindoor etc. The water after the ritual is said to flow (or drain) into the lake region.

A recent news item: The temple has been chosen to feature in a special postcard by the postal department — indicating its cultural prominence in the region.

✅ Why Visit

Scenic: Since the temple is close to the lake and the tranquil lakeside walkway (Thandi Sadak), it offers both spiritual and visual appeal.

Unique architecture/history: Stone form of the goddess, old shrine with local significance — for someone interested in regional temples beyond the major tourist spots, this is a good find.

Good for quieter time or reflection: Compared to very large pilgrimage shrines, this one likely offers a somewhat calmer experience (though still visited).

Photo opportunity: The vantage point, stone temple and lake backdrop offer good visuals.

⚠️ Tips for Visiting

Since it is in a hill-station (Nainital), even near lakeside the weather can change; evenings get cooler — carry a light jacket.

If you are staying near Mall Road or Tallital, allow some time to walk/drive to the temple — the access route (Thandi “cold” road) may be narrow or crowded at peak times.

Respect the devout nature of the place: dress modestly, shoes likely need to be removed in certain spaces.

If you want to take the “water offered to goddess” or engage in special rituals — check local timings or ask the temple committee for details.

Peak tourist periods (weekends, holidays) will bring more footfall — for a quieter visit aim for early morning or later in...

One of the ancient temple of Nainital. Located in Thandi Sarak, highly revered by the people. It has a nice view from Mall Road Nainital. In Thandi Sarak no vehicular traffic allowed and people can walk only in this road, so those who wants to visit this temple will have to go to Pasan Devi Temple on foot only for a distance of about one hundred metres.
