My visit to the Chandraprabhu Jain Temple nestled within the walls of Jaisalmer Fort was a serene and spiritually enriching experience. Situated amidst the vibrant lanes and bustling markets of the fort, this ancient temple offers a tranquil haven for reflection and devotion. In this review, I will share my impressions of the Chandraprabhu Jain Temple, highlighting its architectural beauty, religious significance, and the sense of peace it instills in visitors.

Chandraprabhu Jain Temple in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.

Address : Fort Rd, Khejer Para, Manak Chowk, Amar Sagar Pol, Jaisalmer, Rajasthan 345001

Mulnayak Sri Sri Chandraprabhu Swami, white Colour, padmasana posture.

Chandraprabhu Temple is an exemplary Jain temple built in the 16th century. It is one among the seven temples that were constructed for the 8th Jain Tirthankara Sri Chandraprabhu Swami.

Located inside the Golden Fort, it is a symbol of an anciently Rajput style of architecture. The Jain shrine made of yellow stone is carved in intricate designs with beautiful corridors and curved facades. The interiors form a series of toranas featuring finely sculpted pillars. The real specimen of the temple is its complex designs constructed in mortars and stones. All the temples are connected by walkways forming a cluster. Its complexity is a significant aspect of the fort architecture.

The Rajput architecture of this temple can be seen in its elaborately carved mandapa and pillars & the dome from the inside of this temple is finely carved with delicate sculptures.

There are walkways through which you can go to upper levels of this temple, and explore the carvings from a close distance.

The carved idol of Chandraprabhu is made of pure marble, and there are innumerable sculptures of apsaras (nymphs), elephants and other characters from Jain mythology carved in the pillars of the temple.

Beautiful corridors will lead you to inner parts of this temple, and there are courtyards with intricately designed stonework.

How to reach : By Air : Jodhpur Airport is the closest domestic airport . By Train : Jaisalmer is well connected with a wide network of trains covering most of the Indian cities like Delhi, Jodhpur, Jaipur and others. Some of the popular trains are Delhi Jaisalmer Express, Jodhpur Jaisalmer Express, Howrah Jaisalmer Express and Lalgarh Jaisalmer Special.

Once you reach the station, there are many auto-rickshaws and private taxis standing outside the station that will take you to the city on a...

Travel and tourism are complementary to each other. Best ways to get rid of mental pressure and stresses. Visit of religious sites also give us peace and then spiritually we enjoy. We got the opportunity to see one such temple which is interpreted for its interior and exterior furnishing, and its Architecture during the tour of Jaisalmer Fort. It was Chandraprabhu Swami Jain temple.

This Jain temple which is dedicated to the fourth Tirthankar Chandraprabhu is a magnificent heritage. The temple has very beautiful stone carvings and sculptures are adorable. The artist and stone engravers were masters of art.  Dome ceiling is very attractive. The idols of the Tirthankaras are installed in a circular gallery under the dome on the first floor.  From here the sight of the main sanctum looks extremely attractive. The stone pillars and archway on which extremely intricate carvings are done is amazing with Jainism religious and cultural motifs. This temple is a major center of attraction and entrance fees are charged here. Jaisalmer's famous yellow or golden stone is used in its construction as the whole fort is built with these stones.

We spent about half an hour in this temple. Nearest attractions are Baa Ri Haveli, Saalim Singh's Haveli etc are easily accessible. It's a major attraction among...

My visit was made extra special by a self-professed guide with 35 years of experience who ambushed me upon my entry into the temple. Insisting on a tour which I had neither requested for nor agreed to, he regaled me with stories of all 24 Jain prophets, the 5 vows of Jainism and how images of the holy Hindu family of Shiva, Parvathi and Ganesha found their way into a Jain temple. Just as I was about to escape the cycle of rebirths and the clutches of my new-made ‘friend’, my guide to enlightenment brought me back to earth by asking for a small token of appreciation for his illustrious explanations. Not wanting to disrespect the elderly in a sacred space, I parted with some of my tourist rupees. And I thought I was free… until he led me to a Brahmin who made me sit while he blessed me with prayers. There was nary a part of the ritual or a word of his chant I understood until the holy man gestured to his oil lamp (see attached photograph) and asked me to bless him in return in rupees. Unsure if he’d curse me if I had refused, I placed a 100-rupee note on the plate, to which he smiled and pointed to the 500-rupee note on the plate. It was then when I realized that the Brahmin had an interesting interpretation of the Jain precept of asteya, non-stealing. Namaste!

Very beautiful temple of the Jain. The place is worth a visit. As foreigner you pay 250 rupees (as foreigner you need to pay more in most places in India). The complex is composed of several buildings with the prophets of Jain. Inside we were approached by a person who offers to guide us for free. During the course you understand that you should make a donation and at the end we paid the donation (500 rupee) and the guide (500 rupee). Of course you might say no but you might not want to go in lengthy discussions with the guy. (Common and annoying practice in India) Two less stars for this and also the fact that water lines and electric cables are just hanging around and are not nicely implemented. Clearly they don’t have the finesse of construction anymore that they had at the time of the maharajas…
