The Garden is known for its immense contributions towards conservation and sustainable utilization of important plant resources of economic, ornamental, horticultural, biological, ecological, educational and recreational values. The Botanic Garden is actually the historical ‘Sikander Bagh’ laid out around 1800 AD as a royal garden by the ‘nawabs’ (King) of Lucknow. It is located in the heart of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh state. The garden, full of greenery and vast collection of plant diversity is spread over an area of 65 acres and serves as lungs of the city.
This Botanic Garden serves as a National Facility with four main functions viz. conservation, education, scientific research and display of plant diversity in plant houses and arboreta. It is designed to conserve the indigenous and exotic flora and fulfils the basic function of making available for study, research and use, at one place, a wide diversity of trees, shrubs, climbers and other plant species. The Botanic Garden is a living repository of over 5000 taxa/cultivars of various groups of native and exotic plants. The garden has an excellent collection of ornamental crops, trees, houseplants, medicinal plants, cycads, palms, ferns, bryophytes, bonsai, water lilies, cacti and succulents. Read moreThe National Botanical Research Institute popularly known as Sikander Bagh, was laid out by Nawab Saadat Ali Khan (1789 – 1814) which was further improved upon by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the latter naming it after his wife Sikander Mahal Begum.
The present area of the garden is 27 hectares.
The Botanic Garden serves as a National Facility with three main functions viz., Conservation, education and bio-aesthetics.
A repository of germplasm collection of various tropical and sub-tropical plant species, comprising 5,000 taxa, representing 212 families, the Botanic Garden has rich genetic treasure with the collection of trees, shrubs and herbs of ornamental, economic, medicinal, aromatic and rare importance, hailing from the indigenous and exotic sources.
Important features of the garden are a library, a large herbarium fine lawns, rose gardens, conservatory, cactus house and the lily pool.
In no other place in Lucknow have I witnessed so much greenery at one place! The roads in NBRI are boulevards with trees on either side and there are greenhouses too.
In the morning, you will find people doing yoga in the main park. Yoga sessions commence at 6:30 everyday and are free to be attended by one and all. Besides this, kids come to play frisbee, football etc and you will be surprised at the number of people who turn up every day attired in track pants and sports shoes.
