Vengeeswarar Temple — Attraction in Zone 10 Kodambakkam

A very old ancient temple in the heart of Chennai. A temple dating back to more than 1000 years old. A temple from the chola period.

A temple that brings back so many nostalgic memories, since have seen this temple from my childhood. Have seen this temple in such a worst pathetic condition. Those days not even one person used to go inside this temple.

Today so happy to see the temple in absolute beauty, so majestic, so beautiful, right from the rajagopuram to the Swami - Ambal sannadhi, everything is so absolutely majestic. Copper platings all over the sannadhi, a copper plated kodimaram. So amazing to see that things have changed for the best for this temple in my life time.

Many people would say so many things as to who did what to improve this temple, but i would give full praise and full marks to the head priest Mr.Swaminatha Gurukal (who is no more). He was the man who didn't loose interest in this temple, he was the man who did the daily pooja even if no did come to the temple. he was the man who encouraged people to come and have darshan.

Such a humble, nice man. Sad that he didn't live to see the temple in its absolute beauty today. His son has taken over as the head priest now and does all the pooja work.

Though lot of controversy persists over the temple administrators, but good to see that people have not lost sight of what they wanted to do. Through lot of people sheer hard work and persistence, today the temple is in its absolute stunning beauty.

Though seen this temple from my childhood, but today only i noticed that the ambal shrine in this temple is after the nandhi and the kodimaram, thanks to the gurukal in Naganatha Swamy kovil, Pamani, Mannarkudi, am begining to notice lot of things which i have taken for granted.

Temple faces east, kodimaram present, Swami faces east, Ambal faces south. A huge Temple tank was present in those days, but today vanished.

Swami name : Vengeeswarar Ambal name: Shanthanayaki.

The height of the surrounding area inside the temple is higher than the moolavar area. so you can see the nandhi, kodimaram and the moolavar sannadhi all lower than the surrounding area.

The Vengeeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple situated in the neighbourhood of Vadapalani in Chennai, India. Though the sthalam dates back to vedic age, the temple structure is over 1000 years old and one of the oldest Hindu temples in Chennai city. The temple is dedicated to Shiva who is called Lord Vengeeswarar and the goddess is called Saanthanayaki Ambal. The entrance to this temple is crowned with a big rajagopuram adorned with several stucco images. Other deities: Ganapathi, Kasi Viswanathar and Visalakshi, Bairavar, Lord Subramanya, Goddess Gajalakshmi. There is a separate shrine for Lord Saneeswarar. With Chennai city expanding, the elegance of this temple has dwindled. Much of its space has been lost to road widening and metro rail over the decades.

Festivals Pradhosha pooja is one of the most important among the poojas performed to the Graceful Lord Shiva. In Shukla Paksha (15 moon days from New moon to Full moon) and Krishna Paksha (15 moon days from Full moon to New moon) the evening of the trayodasi (thirteenth moon day) between 4.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. is called Pradhosham. It comes once in fifteen moon days. Pradhosha time is especially meant for praying Lord Shiva. வடபழனி சாந்த நாயகி சமேத வேங்கீஸ்வரர் திருக்கோவில்

வடபழனி என்றதுமே நாம் எல்லோரும் அறிந்து வைத்திருப்பது முருகன் கோவில் மட்டுமே, அவ்வளவு சிறப்பு மிக்க இடமாக வடபழனி முருகன் கோவில் சிறப்பு பெற்று விளங்குகிறது. இதே அளவு சிறப்பு இருந்தும் பிரபளமாகாத சோழர்காலத்து கோவில் தான் வட பழனி ஸ்ரீவேங்கீஸ்வரர் திருக்கோவில்.

ஸ்தல வரலாறு: வண்டுகள் தீண்டும் முன்னரே மலர்களைப் பறித்து, இறைவனை பூஜிக்க விரும்பினார் மழ முனிவர்(குழந்தை முனிவர்). அதனால், பொழுது விடியும் முன்னரே மரங்களில் ஏறி பூக்களைத் பறிக்க இறைவைனை பணிந்தார், இவரது பக்தியைப் போற்றும் வகையில் எளிதாக மரம் ஏற அவருடைய கால்களை, புலிக் கால்களாக மாற்றித் மாற்றியும் பூக்களை இரவில் காணும் வகையில் கூர்மையான பார்வையும் தந்தான் இறைவன். அதனால் அவர், புலிக்கால் முனிவ’ரானார். இவரை வியாக்கிர பாதர்’ (புலிப்பாதம் கொண்டவர்) என்றும் அழைப்பார்கள். அந்த வேங்கை(புலி)க் கால் முனிவர் வழிபட்ட ஈசனாதலால், இந்தக் கோயில் மூலவர், `வேங்கீஸ்வரர்’ என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறார். சிவபெருமானின் திருநடனங்களைக் காண விரும்பி, அத்திரி முனிவர்-அனுசூயா தம்பதியருக்கு மகனாக அவதரித்தார் ஆதிசேஷன். இவரும் வியாக்கிரபாதரும் சேர்ந்து சிவப் பரம்பொருளை வழிபட்ட ஸ்தலம்தான் இந்த வேங்கீஸ்வரர் கோவில்

கோவில் அமைப்பு: யானையின் பின்புற வடிவில் கஜபிருஷ்டத் தோற்றம் எனப்படும் ,விமானம் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது தனிச் சிறப்பு. இந்த அமைப்பே மயிலை கபாலீஸ்வரர் கோவிலிலும் உள்ளது. விநாயகரை கடந்ததும்,தட்சணா மூர்த்தியும், பின்புறம் மேற்கு நோக்கி விஷ்ணுவும், வடக்குப் புறம் நின்ற கோலத்தில் பிரம்மாவும்,தெற்கு நோக்கிய தியான சண்டிகேஸ்வரர், துர்க்கையும் உள்ளனர். சுப்பிரமணியர் வள்ளி-தெய்வானையோடு தனிக் கோயிலில் காட்சிதருகிறார். வடமேற்கு மூலையில் காசி விஸ்வநாதர்-விசாலாட்சி, மகாலட்சுமியை சந்நிதிகள் மற்றும் விசாலமான அழகிய முன்மண்டபத்துடன் கூடிய தனிக் கோயில். அதில் இருபுறமும் உள்ள சிலைகள் அழகான கலைத் தோற்றத்துடன் காணப்படுகின்றன. நின்ற கோலத்தில் சாந்தநாயகி அருள்புரிகிறார்.

பங்குனி திருவிழா: சிவராத்திரி, பிரதோஷம் ஆகியவை சிறப்புடன் எல்லா சிவாலயங்களை போல் இங்கும் விமர்சையாக கொண்டாடபடுகிறது. தனிச்சிறப்பாக இக்கோவிலில் பங்குனி மாத திருவிழா மிகசிறப்பு மிக்கதாகும்,12 நாள் பங்குனி பெருவிழா வெகு விமர்சையாகவும் கோலாகலமாகவும் நடைபெறும். இத்திருவிழாவில் கொடி ஏற்றம், தினசரி பஞ்சமூர்த்தி, சந்திரசேகர் சுவாமிகள் பவனி, தேரோட்டம், திருக்கல்யாண உற்சவம், சிறப்பு வாண வேடிக்கை, புஷ்ப பல்லக்கு பவனி, 108 சங்கு அபிஷேகம் போன்ற நிகழ்ச்சிகள் பக்தர்களை மெய்சிலிர்க்க வைக்கும் நிகழ்வுகளாகும். வினாயகப் பெருமான் உத்ஸவமும், காலையில் கொடி ஏற்றம், பஞ்சமூர்த்திகள் பவனி, சூரிய பிரபை, சந்திர பிரபை,அதிகார நந்தி,பூத வாகனம் வெள்ளி நாக வாகனம், ரிஷப வாகனம்,யானை வாகன பவனி என வித விதமான பவனி விழா நடபெறும்,மேலும் மிகவும் சிறப்பு மிக்க திருத்தேர் வடம் பிடித்தல், அன்று மாலை திருத்தேரிலிருந்து ஸ்ரீ பஞ்சமூர்த்திகள் திருக்கோவிலுக்கு எழுந்தருளல் நிகழ்வு மிகவும் பக்தி பெருக்குடன் கொண்டாட படுவது மிகவும் சிறப்பு. தீர்த்தவாரி, திருக்கல்யாண உற்சவம், திருகைலாய பர்வதம் பஞ்சமூர்த்திகள் வாகனங்களில் பவனி, சிறப்பு வாண வேடிக்கை நடைபெறும், இறுதி நாளில் கொடி இறக்கப்படுகிறது.

இக்கோவில் வழிபடுவதால் சிறப்பு பலன்கள்:

நோய் முதலிய பிரச்சனைகள் தீர்வதுடன், இங்கு சிறப்பு மூர்த்தியாக பைரவருக்கு அடிக்கடி விபத்துகள் ஏற்படுபவர்கள் தேங்காய் நெய் விளக்கு (நீராஞ்சனம்) ஏற்றி வழிபட்டால் விபத்து அபாயங்கள் குறையும் என்று நம்பபடுகிறது.
