The exterior is stunning. The surrounding grave yard with its pathways and trees are tranquil and beautiful. The graves go back in time and the grounds are kept in a suitably non manicured way. I found out after this is for the biodiversity of the area which makes it more beautiful still. Unfortunately, on the day of my visit, there was a concert in so I was not able to go in and my time was too short in Cork to return the same day so I will just have to come another day. Id advice checking if it's open to the public on the day you are coming, and I definitely recommend you come......ok it's now the end of August, and I've come back, and it was worth it, ā¬7 entry for a tourist visit. Beautiful interior, fabulous stained glass windows. Carvings and columns and secret little alcoves for reflection.Cute gift shop. Very pleasant attendants. A very good history/ guide map available. There are two sides you can come to the church from, both are beautiful, the rear entrance has most of the garden, which includes a mindful/prayer labyrinth, really nice. Everything about St Fin Barre's cathedral is beautiful. On this occasion when I arrived service was in, so unless you are attending, definitely check the timetable. Id love to come back for a concert, this year they were held in August , but I wasn't ready . I will come back again, and again, and again. Definitely recommend you come.

Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral in Ireland, built along the Lee River in the city of Cork. Dedicated to the cityās patron Finbarr of Cork (born 550) who founded a Monastery and his remains were brought to the site around the 7th-century AD. The original building survived until the 12th century and over time the site was rebuilt and used with various religious structures. In the attempt to build a much more powerful structure the Victorian architect, William Burges design won a competition for the current building. He designed most of the cathedral's architecture, sculptures, mosaics and interior. The foundation stone was laid in 1865 and it took until 1879 until the 3 limestone spires were completed. An estimate suggests that in total of some 1,260 sculptures include 32 gargoyles, each with different animal heads are included in the construction. Burges's highlight of the design was the western faƧade which includes the theme of the last judgement and the twelve Apostles bearing instruments of their martyrdom. A gilded copper "resurrection angel" facing eastward on the main spire is the cathedral's most iconic feature, designed and installed by Burges in 1870 as a donation. He originally won the award with a budget of 15,000.- Pounds but knew he needs at least double. With the details of the designs features its final cost was above 100,000.- Pounds.

One of my favorites cathedrals here in Cork! It's absolutely stunning and imposing. The gardens are amazing and incredibly clean and tidy, with its blooming and colorful flowers. You can relax while laying on the grass and looking at the beautiful cathedral. When I heard about the labyrinth in the gardens I thought that there were some kind of enormous walls of plants, but it's just a tiny, babies-friendly labyrinth.. it was kinda of a disappointmentš In addition, I didn't see the cathedral from the inside because you have to pay ā¬6 and, in my opinion, it's a little expensive and unfair because there are so many stunning churches and cathedrals and all of them are free! I don't get the point. The most interesting fact that I heard about the cathedral is the story of the golden angel located in the back side: it's a common thought that Cork inhabitants will be the first ones to know when the end of the world will come, because the angel will play his trumpet. It's a very interesting legend!

While not ancient, Saint Fin Barre's cathedral in Cork still manages to be awe-inspiring. Visiting is made simple and informative by the leaflet you get at the entrance, and the staff issuing tickets is also very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions. The architect charged with the construction must have been quite a character, and it is probably not by chance that he is mentioned everywhere as you visit the church. A feature of churches - primarily in the British Isles - which I find very endearing is the connection between the religious building and the memory of the young people from the congregation that were killed in a war. This cathedral is no exception, and the names of the fallen are preserved neatly in a thick book that can be admired close to one of the transept pillars.

Impossible to miss as it dominates Cork. About 15 to 20 min sustained walk from the city center (English Market). Peaceful place for prayer and meditation. As others pointed out, I find it sad that they make you pay to enter. I don't mind a donation if there is a broken column somewhere but I find it terrible that a till is placed at the entrance. It's literally turning a church into a tourist attraction. Again, I understand they have to raise money to maintain the building but the way it's done is detrimental to the main purpose of this church. Still, there are some benches on the right that you may access for free if you insist that you are there for... prayers! To visit once or to give it a skip if in hurry.
