There's a lot of positives to this place.
I probably didn't select the best option for me. I went for a prawn / noodle soup as I like fish dishes. I thought that the soup was a bit bland- it didn't taste bad but didn't have much to get excited about. I dosed it with soy sauce to try to give it some flavour but for €12.50 I feel I could have prepared this dish in my kitchen without much effort. In fact if I had I would feel that I had left something out!
The broth was a bit watery - noodles nice - two nice prawns done in a batter where nicely cooked. Guy next to me was having a dish which looked and smelled much nicer than mine so I'm putting my bland experience down to an individual bad choice as opposed to any overall review.
I had high expectations as this eatery has just been rewarded a place in Ireland's top 100 places to dine. I'm sure it deserves an accolade but for me I'm sorry to say I've had nicer pot noddles!
I liked the athmosphere and it is nice to be able to see the chefs at work in the kitchen through a big screen like stage. The staff are all dressed in Japanese traditional clothes which is nice.
On the counter there is a collection box for a group who are fundraising to try to repeal the 8th amendment ( this is the abortion / prolife debate in Ireland) - I personally think that such a divisive issue should not be promoted in a restaurant who have put a lot of effort into creating a pleasant atmosphere! This did impact on my experience and I'm sure others would feel the same and it might put some people off returning.
Overall - I would say to give them a try. I think that the staff who take the orders need to be more skilled in directing those who land into a Japanese restaurant for the first time in their selection. I asked the girl if my selection was nice and she said yes - maybe she should have said do you like x or it a bit tastes like y or what kind of food do you normally like etc....
I would go back and I recommend you to support this welcome culinary adventure into Ireland's...
Read moreUnique plating with a bit of a modern presentation of flavors. Very good, but seems to be missing something. Most of the dishes can be ordered as takeaway, and there are 6 barstools to eat at. I wish these we're facing the kitchen area, though I know that would be difficult to do in the space, I felt very strange (and somewhat disrespectful) having my back to the kitchen. Otherwise, you can look out the window or at a wall. The food was very well plated, and the taste was very good. I ordered the seaweed salad and the salmon zuke don. The seeweed salad was good, but it was large enough to be a main course, and while it had a lot of flavors being combined with the greens, it seemed slightly salty, and would probably have been tastier in a smaller quantity (1/2 or 1/3 would be great). The Salmon Zuke Don was also plated very well, but there was one fish scale and I ran into one fish bone on the first bite. There were no other problems with the fish. The salmon was tasty, but it was not obviously marinated like advertised. The salmon felt a bit more tender, but it wasn't as tender as I would expect from being marinated. The wasabi was creatively stuck on the side of the bowl, and was surprisingly potent, which I really appreciate! The rice underneath the salmon had a little bit of broth on the top layer that gave it good flavor, but my favorite part was the shiso shavings in the dish as it paired very well with the salmon! There was a lot of salmon in the dish, so you are definitely getting a good deal, but for that much salmon I think having half marinated one way and the other half being marinated another way (maybe yuzu marinated or spicier marinade) would keep it interesting the whole way through. Very good dishes, very good service, but there a few things that could have made this experience even better, so I am...
