Did the ‘ try sea kayaking’ intro day in late June and was blown away by the experience !! I was a little tense as It was my first time in a kayak but was put to ease quickly upon meeting Eileen and Seán who’s experience and passion for kayaking was instantly comforting and infectious. After a quick intro and safety briefing on land we went through some basic manoeuvres in the safety of the harbour and were lucky enough with the weather on the day to make the journey to Ireland’s Eye . We explored a cave and a rock pool full of seals that only the lucky few on kayak can access in good conditions and were guided past and identified colonies of seabirds including puffins that aren’t seen on the mainland . After a quick brew and stretch of the legs on the island we were shown a few more skills in the safety of beautiful carrageenan bay with only the native grey seals to witness our beginners errors , I’m sure our laughs could be heard on the mainland. The paddle back home was fun as we all worked up a sweat under the watchful eyes of very experienced and professional instructors, each of which took the time and had the patience to work with our individual needs and levels of fitness. Upon our return to the harbour and in the absence of a sit down meal due to Covid restrictions we were all treated to a top class fish n chips from a local restaurant which was the icing on the cake of an unforgettable day .
Overall 10/10 and not to be missed if you’re lucky enough to have got this far and are...
Read moreHighy Recommend! I joined a lovely bunch of six fellow enthusiastic novice sea kayakers on a weekend course with Shearwater in June 2021. It was the most fantastic breakout from all that the last year has thrown at us. We all had a wonderful experience, learning kayaking techniques as well as enjoying the stunning coastal scenery around Howth. Eileen & Sean, Ciaran & Sue were all excellent instructors, being informative, professional, friendly and fun. Added to our experience due to the luck of having good weather, was an encounter with a huge number of breeding sea birds and cutely curious seals, all hanging out or perched around the cliffs of Ireland’s Eye. That was a lucky and most unexpected surprise. Sean & Sue added to the experience with some very interesting snippets of insight into the lives of some of those birds and seals. I thoroughly enjoyed the two days and would have loved to have continued for a whole week. I certainly hope to be back out on the water with Shearwater as soon as there’s...
Read moreWe really enjoyed the way the school and the courses were run. You have a fantastic team and we appreciated the extra attention that they paid to us knowing that we were strugglinging a little. The combination of teaching and the more personal touch of talking to us trough the tough parts made it special.
We didn't want to eat the meal that came with the course, was outside due to Covid so we were able to swap the token for a lot of fresh fish from the chosen fish shop. Again, very special touch to go the extra mile from the customer.
It was a challenging weekend but we learned so much and had a lot of fun, the trip to Ireland's eye was inspiring, will do more...
