Rothe house is one of the places on the Medieval Mile in Kilkenny I thought would be worth a look for completeness sake, especially with so many incredible cathedrals and a castle along the strip, but it ended up being my favourite attraction. With a measly €5.50 entry fee I and an unassuming frontage I definitely wasn't expecting to spend 2 hours wandering around the estate and loving every minute. Rothe house is a late 16th century mansion built by one of the most powerful men in Kilkenny and inhabited by his descendants. The exhibit is broken down to 3 time periods (16th century, 19th century and prior to the 14th century) within the 3 houses that make up the estate. At the back of the property is a massive garden which appears out of nowhere and imbues you with an added appreciation to how wealthy the Rothe's were and also how much effort has gone into the restoration. There are enough relics and rooms to keep yourself occupied for a couple of hours if you want to take your time, but on the same token you could easily spend a few minutes in each area and still take a lot away from it. The whole experience is really well done and props to those who have gone to so much effort to make it look so authentic. Well worth a visit.
It's hard to review Rothe house because of the story behind it and the labour and energy that was put in to restore it. I respect that. On the other hand the staff was really not interrested, a guide is a A4 xeroxed paper and upon my visit some of the rooms were not availabe to visit. I also feel that some of the stuff displayed don't fit in the house as they really have no connection to the story of the house. The thing I loved most is the garden. Would be awesome to be able to have a cup of coffee or tea there. I hope the managing society will be able to make the house more interresting in the future as thw architecture and thought behind it is marvelous.
We live in Kilkenny and had guests from the states over and was recommended Rothe house in passing. As we approached the location in which I pass daily for work we enter into a beautiful entrance I didn’t know existed! The woman working the desk was polite and helpful with all inquiry’s, the admission fee was affordable and well worth the cost. You self guide throughout the location and have extras to learn about, best part was the garden. Beautiful hidden inside the city’s buildings.
Beautiful place to visit while in the Medieval City of Kilkenny. A historic monument with great gardens. "Rothe House is a unique Tudor merchant’s townhouse, built between 1594 and 1610. The property comprises three houses, three enclosed courtyards and a large garden to the rear." "It is the only remaining example of a complete burgage plot in Ireland, and considered to be nationally significant because of the range of original post-medieval features that survive."
Rothe House and its garden is actually quite nice. However, giving only 2 points as a) the guided tour was not available (okay, due to staff shortage), the entry fee was still €7.50 per person which is imo really a rip off for what can be seen here. And b) it seems like we could have visited the garden for free (another side entrance) for a donation. And the garden was the nicest part of the tour.
The house was interesting for a quick walk through. For me the real shining star was the gardens. I'm amazed at how they've analyzed soil to determine plants that were there, used art and records from when Rothe lost the property to convert a trashy cement parking lot back into a beautiful garden reflecting what it once was. There were also snowdrops and crocus blooming!
