Would highly recommend a visit to Kilkenny Castle. We took a guided tour. Tickets vary in price, with under 12s going free!

The tour starts at the main door and takes you downstairs to one of the turrets with a wattle and daub roof. The guide pointed out the chisel marks which are visible after 100s of years! From here you head back upstairs to learn about some of the residents of the castle, including the last lord who sold the castle to the government for £50!

From here you visit some of the formal entertaining rooms, which have been restored and furnished for the most part with original furniture. There is an original tea chest which the guide explained in great detail. We took a cantilevered staircase up to the top level to visit some bedrooms.

The highlight of the tour for most is the enormous picture gallery. It's the second largest room in the country second only to Trinity college library. The roof is painted carved wood. The walls are covered with hundreds of paintings.

Lots and lots to do at...

One of the best experiences, polite and warmth staff with the nice approach to visitors. If you have any questions just be free to ask. Many different rooms to qnd each has it own story to tell. I was most amazed with portraits in big room and amazing roof work in very same room, and gorgeous design of stairs going next to that room. The blue corridor which was the guest section for staying in that time gives a "wow" and Ave. With the best views to the premises (yard, rose garden and river) you can also see how toys looked and what kind of finest porcelain has being used. One whole experience finished with nice cup of coffee in Kilkenny Castle coffee shop outside. Give it a go and nice long day stay for you and your family/friends...

Today, I visited Kilkenny Castle and was thoroughly impressed. The castle’s stunning exterior, with its large circular towers and expansive grounds, immediately caught my eye. The beautifully maintained gardens, especially the Rose Garden, were a delight to explore.

Inside, the Long Gallery stood out with its painted ceiling and portraits. The library and drawing room offered a glimpse into the castle’s opulent past. The knowledgeable staff provided insightful tours, enhancing my experience.

Kilkenny Castle is not just a historical site but a cultural hub with various events and exhibitions. I highly recommend visiting for its rich history, stunning architecture, and beautiful surroundings. Amazing! I would highly...
