What a fabulous new space the Evans Home is for The Butler Gallery! Accessible, well thought out layout. Great variety of artworks on display. The Bloods by Amelia Stein, images of Irish Defence Force personnel is beautifully executed and hung in an amazing space while the ongoing Butler collection is spread out over the remainder with the O'Malley collection. Some hidden gems and surprises await including an early work by Paul Henry! The Education programme is as flexible and diverse as it is accessible, engaging and relevant. A new visitor reception area complete with a small retail outlet and a lovely bistro (more than just coffee) with indoor and outdoor seating rounds off the experience. Attention to detail here is top notch, a truly excellent and fitting addition to the cultural scene of Kilkenny City and the Irish Arts scene in general. In fact The New Butler is as satisfying an experience as one might get in any of the smaller international galleries and that's speaking from experience. In summary, a not to be missed gem.
