Went to the paranormal investigation night from 9pm to midnight on the 29th October this year. I had been six years ago to one held be a paranormal team and this one was run by the staff of the jail themselves. Sadly this one did not even compare, the staff were very friendly and tried they're best I feel but it wasn't an enjoyable experience. Far to many people wandering around without guides and very little background information given on the jail considering these people work there. I met some people there who were at the one years ago and they said they would've liked a refund it was that bad. I'm unsure if this was the first time the staff had tried this evening themselves but it certainly felt unprofessionally done. I loved the first one I did and found it an amazing experience so hopefully a proper investigatory team will return next year if not I wouldn't recommend this tour...

There was some very interesting information on the walls and audio as you go into the cells but no experience that would would suggest the '"over 18s" or "exclusive once every 2 months" type of event. we were greeted with what seemed like volunteers that had been promised a happy career, to find them working for free many months later.

I was expecting for people to scare us or add to the vibe, in particular that they were actively advertising it as one of the most haunted places in Ireland, there was no real reference to any of that during the tour.

I would say that is completely misleading saying over 18s, anyone can go. And absolutely no difference between a day to day experience and that of the night event. The reason for 2 stars is the self guided info is relative, despite being quite small, and some of the people on the tour played...

We visited Wicklow Gaol today and we were fascinated by the history contained within the place. The Staff we met were friendly and curtious. A big disappointment, for us, was how neglected and unkempt the restaurant and toilet facilities were. Even the ground where the outdoor tables were standing was littered with used napkins. The tables in the restaurant were sticky to the touch. As we made our way through the Gaol itself, we felt, while the exhibits were very interesting, a lot of them were tired and in need of care and updating. Being able to smell old cooking oil all the way through the building was very off putting. So, in conclusion, as an Irish person, I was more than a bit embarrassed at the number of foreigners visiting such a tourist attraction, which needs a great deal of upgrading and a...

I feel compelled to review this place after spending such a thought provoking afternoon there. There is so much to learn about the prison and the people who were incarcerated there. Everything is done with respect and a desire to communicate the truth about what lives in prison were like. I could have spent a lot longer there. One thing I would say is that I felt a presence on the ground floor and kept turning around to see who was behind me. I also felt very uneasy on the top floor which is where the recreation of the transportation experience is. The people were very welcoming and we stopped for a chat on our way out. Recommend highly if you are in this lovely little town - do visit the beautiful harbour and look out for the seabirds too. I saw lots of terns.

We went late in the day and did a self guided tour, but cut it a bit short as they were about to close (430pm). Very interesting historical look at not just the jail itself but some of the famous names that passed thru its doors. Some of the bits a little graphic for younger visitors or those with delicate sensibilities. For those, recommend skipping the dungeon with fake blood splashed on the walls. Overall an important landmark rightfully preserved, maybe not for everyone. Also doorways and stairs are very small/steep, (as to be expected from a period building,) not easy to navigate for those with limited mobility. Have heard the restaurant is lovely but didn't have a chance to try at this visit.
