What can I say about this gem of a seafood bistro (they also serve non-seafood but. always go for the sumptuous fresh fish Greg serves). Both Tim and I chose calamari to start and honestly, I’d not tasted calamari this good since the early 90s when I’d enjoyed some that had been caught, on a day’s sea fishing, by the late Tony O’Malley and cooked by another artist, a dear friend of mine, Nicole Thoma. Had she not chosen painting as her preferred form of expression, cuisine would have been something else in which she excelled. Anyway, Greg this evening did justice to the tentacled traveller of the deep and brought me back to the days of my youth with this beautiful dish the likes of which I’d not enjoyed in over 30 years! For mains Tim chose the seafood pasta dish (again, he enjoyed it so much the previous visit!) and I tried the tempura of monk fish and prawns. Portions were just right and the food, needless to say, cooked to perfection! We both gave way to temptation and opted for baked Alaska for desert - sinfully delicious! To accompany our meal we chose a lovely Italian Pinot Grigio and rounded off the evening with an espresso. The service, headed up by Greg’s cheerful and efficient partner Ane and her excellent team of floor staff, could not have been more attentive (but unintrusive) friendly and helpful. Wicklow is so fortunate to have a restaurant of the calibre of Blue within its bounds. Continued success to Blue, and all who...
Read moreI was travelling from the UK last week (3rd July) and emailed the restaurant (on Sunday 29th June) via the website contact form to book a table for 4th July for my Mum and Sister. There is NO restaurant booking engine. I received and email reply on Wednesday 2nd July telling me that they only take reservations by phone and to call the restaurant. I called as soon as I got off the plane (on 3rd) only to be told that the restaurant was booked out for the 4th. I asked the lady (who was very nice) why there was no booking form? She said that it was only a 32 seater restaurant and it didn't really work for them. I said not having one doesn't work for me (or any customer). I explained that if the restaurant had 2 sittings a day for the 4 days they are opened then that would be potentially 265 covers and a booking system would be ideal method to manage that. I've been to the restaurant a few times and although it hasn't reached the heights and standards of the previous (Lighthouse) restaurant it was pretty good by Wicklow standards. Sadly the town of Wicklow does not provide much competition to drive the standards up. This is more a message to the owners to get a booking engine onto the site to accommodate visitors from abroad...
Read moreMyself and my family +1 dined in Blue last night, to celebrate my daughter's Leaving Cert & College acceptance.
Wicklow Town has lacked quality restaurants for years, with an offering of run of the mill restaurants, with "average at best" menus. Blue has upped-the-ante considerably with their spectacular menu.
I had the Seafood chowder to start - I consider myself to be a chowder aficianado, but I was blown away with the chowder presented in Blue. The flavours were intense, in this beautifully presented dish.
For mains I had the Surf and Turf which was spectacular in every way.
For dessert I had the selection of ice creams with anglaise.
One of my sons is vegetarian and he was exceptionally impressed with the vegetarian options available. We were all extremely impressed with both the food and professional service provided.
Blue restaurant is a very welcome addition to a town that has lacked a top quality fish and seafood restaurant for too long. This will be our new "go to" restaurant, from here on!
Highly, highly...
