The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Arezzo has a rich and fascinating history. Originally, the site was home to a sacred spring dedicated to the god Apollo, known for its healing properties. During the Etruscan and Roman periods, this spring attracted worshippers for rituals related to its therapeutic waters. In the early Middle Ages, the spring was called Fonte Tecta and continued to be a significant landmark. However, the arrival of St. Bernardine of Siena in the 15th century marked a turning point. He sought to eliminate the pagan rites associated with the spring and, after some resistance, succeeded in destroying it in 1428. In its place, he built an oratory, which later became a center of devotion. The construction of the current church began in 1435 and was completed around 1444. Designed by Domenico del Fattore, the church features a mix of late Gothic and Renaissance styles. The interior houses valuable works of art, including frescoes by Lorentino d’Andrea and a Renaissance loggia designed by Benedetto da Maiano.

Fantastic and beautiful church that is very private and in a wonderful location. When you enter, you can feel a real sense of spirituality and artwork is also deeply invoking and beautiful. Huge recommendation for anyone going to Arezzo. While not as big as the church in Milano, it is still worth the detour.

This is an artistic gem. Truly a rare beautiful and peaceful place on the outskirts of Arezzo. The artwork invites you to contemplate spirituality, it is easy to get here and you don’t want your leave. Enjoy the park and wander around.

Santa Maria delle Grazie is indeed located in Arezzo, not Milan. This church, although not as famous as its namesake in Milan, is still a significant landmark in Arezzo. It features stunning Renaissance architecture and artwork, including frescoes by Piero della Francesca, a renowned Italian Renaissance artist. The church offers visitors a chance to admire these masterpieces in a serene and historic setting, away from the bustling tourist crowds.
