The church of St. Ampelio is a lovely Romanesque building perched on a small cliff in Bordighera. The legend says that St. Ampelio used to live in the desert of the Thebaid (Egypt) and work as a blacksmith. Tempted by the Devil, he drove him away wielding a red-hot iron and for this reason, as a gift from God, he became insensitive to burns. He is now the patron saint of blacksmiths. St. Ampelio moved to Bordighera to lead a hermit's life, and took refuge in a cave among the rocks of the promontory, where the Benedictine monks later built the church to house his remains. In 1140, however, St. Ampelio’s relics were moved to the convent of the Olivetan monks in Sanremo, and on May 14, 1258, Archbishop Gualtieri ordered to move them again in the convent of St. Stephen, in Genoa. St. Ampelio’s body was taken back to Bordighera on August 16, 1947 and is now kept in the parish of St. Mary Magdalene in the historic center. The Romanesque church was built in the eleventh century, but many features that we can currently see are actually due to major remodeling at the end of the nineteenth century (the old perimeter walls were covered with white stone from la Turbie and the bell tower was built.) Other major restoration works were then made in 1947 when the body of the saint was taken back to the city. As a note of curiosity, it seems that St. Ampelio brought date kernels when he moved from Egypt. These kernels donated so many palm trees to Bordighera that the city became famous as the "Queen of the Palms."

La chiesetta di Sant’Ampelio è una deliziosa costruzione romanica arroccata sul piccolo promontorio di Bordighera. La leggenda narra che Sant’Ampelio scacciò il demonio brandendo un ferro rovente e per questo ottenne come dono da Dio di essere insensibile alle scottature (è infatti il santo patrono dei fabbri-ferrai). Ampelio, dal deserto della Tebaide in Egitto, si ritirò a Bordighera per condurre una vita eremitica, e si rifugiò in una grotta tra gli scogli del promontorio, dove, in epoca successiva, i monaci Benedettini eressero la chiesa per custodire le sue spoglie. Nel 1140 le reliquie di sant'Ampelio furono però spostate nel convento dei monaci olivetani di Sanremo, ed il 14 Maggio 1258, l'arcivescovo Gualtieri ne dispose l'ulteriore spostamento presso il convento di Santo Stefano, a Genova. Solo il 16 di agosto 1947 Il corpo di sant'Ampelio è stato riportato nella città di Bordighera (di cui è il patrono) ed è custodito nella parrocchia di Santa Maria Maddalena nel centro storico. La struttura, in stile romanico, risale all'XI secolo, ma alla fine del XIX secolo vennero compiute importanti opere di risanamento (tra cui la copertura delle antiche mura perimetrali con pietra bianca della Turbie e la costruzione del campanile). Altri grandi lavori di restauro vennero poi compiuti nel 1947, quando il corpo del Santo vennè riportato in città. Come nota di curiosità, pare che Sant’Ampelio portò con sè dall’Egitto i noccioli di dattero e proprio ad essi si devono le molte palme che donarono a Bordighera una connotazione esotica tanto da fruttargli l’appellativo di “Regina della palme”.
