Nata dal disegno dell'architetto vicentino Antonio Caregaro Negrin, datato 27 agosto 1878, la statua del pittore di Castelfranco venne scolpita dallo scultore veneziano Augusto Benvenuti nel 1878. Venne collocata sullo scoglio artificiale eretto al centro del fossato, al suo angolo di nord-est.
