Our winery visit and lunch at Hostaria di Bacco restaurant was one of the highlights of our trip to the Amalfi Coast. The winery tour is brief but informative--you get to see where the wine is aged, barreled, and bottled in a cave cellar that was dug by hand into the rock and the vineyards which are terraced and cling to the side of a mountain. They are called heroic wines because of the difficulty of growing and harvesting them in the extreme slope and salinity of the sea breeze. We loved hearing about the harvesting and tender care that is taken of the vines and during the production. The lunch with paired tastings was absolutely divine. We enjoyed the leisurely pace (about 2.5 hours for lunch alone) and the majestic view of the ocean from the quaint and lovely restaurant. A bit of forewarning: the winery and restaurant are a bit difficult to get to. There are buses and ferries, which we planned to take and walk some to get there from Positano. However, we were unable to find a bus and went from Positano to Amalfi by ferry, and had to take a taxi from Amalfi. There were no buses or ferries running after the tasting and tour (at 3:30pm), so the restaurant/hotel arranged a taxi back to Positano. Totally worth it, but I would recommend arranging transportation ahead of time and more thoughtfully...
Read moreTo book a tour they strictly demand a signed document and creditcard information first, which we disliked. The cheapest tour costs 85€ excl service charge and can be upgraded up to 130€. At 17:00 we first had a tour around the vineyard, cellar and production area, which was very interesting. Then we had to wait 1.5 hours for the tasting in the restaurant across the road. The view from the terrace was beautiful but we had to pay for any extra drinks in the mean time. The waiter was friendly but strange, explicitly giving every table “special treatment”. The food accompanying the wine tasting was basic with ingredients consisting of mostly bread and tomatoes. The wine tasting included their 2023 white, red and rose wine. This was a shame because for the price of 85€ we expected to at least taste some of their better wines. The wines tasted average to us. Compared to similar wine houses. To top it all off there was no possibility to purchase wine after tasting because the shop had closed (21:00 already we were served the last wine). The only option would be to purchase some wines before tasting, which the staff did...
Read moreBeautiful views from the winery! The reason I am giving two stars is because you only get to try only one red wine . They served three whites and one red wine. We didn’t get any brochure explaining each wine . The vineyard is very small although amazing to see how some older vine roots are planted on the side rocky walls. But those grapes are not being used for wine production. Another couple that we met at the hotel recommended some awesome wineries by mount Vesuvious with good red options. Plus getting to Marissa Cuomo winery from Positano is not easy and very expensive! $190 one way. Like I said before only one taste of red! Most wineries that we go to they end the tasting by you choosing an extra serving of your favorite one. Not at the restaurant where they do the tasting. They are too busy attending tables for the restaurant. It would be great if they had a person dedicated to be with the wine tasting customers talking...
