Exceptionally well-curated and informative museum; beautifully designed and fitted out. Went in August and it was totally deserted, leaving lots of time and space to read the vast amount of information about the town and cathedral, from the Roman age to present. Good gift shop with lots of informative short books, some of which are translated into English. The majority of the museum is in both languages....

Questo museo è ricompreso in un biglietto cumulativo, del costo di 6 euro, che consente l'accesso anche a: torre campanaria Ghirlandina, sale del palazzo comunale, acetaia comunale (fabbrica dell'aceto). Quando sono andata io il piano superiore del museo era chiuso per restauro, quindi ho pagato un biglietto di 3 euro per visitare il solo piano terra, composto dal cortile e da due sale. Consiglio di scaricare l'app UNESCO, almeno avrete una breve guida di alcuni pezzi qui contenuti. In particolare l'arca di San Gimignano, che originariamente ricopriva la reliquie del Santo in cattedrale, il leone stiloforo di una delle porte laterali del Duomo ed il pezzo forte del museo: la serie di metope scolpite da un artigiano operante nella cerchia di Wiligelmo. Si tratta di opere eccezionali, che rappresentano, probabilmente, le personificazioni dei popoli più lontani e sconosciuti della terra, almeno per gli occidentali del XII secolo.
