Ghirlandina, the recognisable bell tower of Modena, Italy, is a place I recently had the pleasure of seeing, and I must tell that it was an absolutely unforgettable experience.

I had seen the tower several times from a distance while living in Modena, but I had never actually climbed to the top to take in the breath-taking views of the city and the countryside below. I made the decision to climb, and it was totally worthwhile!

With its 86-meter height, distinctive octagonal shape, and gorgeous marble façade, the tower is a magnificent example of mediaeval architecture. The tower has a strong sense of history and tradition, and as I climbed the twisting staircase, I was impressed by how each step felt like a trip through time.

I was rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of Modena and the surrounding area when I reached the top of the tower, which rendered me speechless. I heartily suggest it to anyone visiting the city because of the amazing views from the summit.

In addition to the vistas, the tower is home to a number of fascinating artefacts and exhibitions that provide details about Modena's history and culture. There is plenty for everyone to enjoy, from breathtaking frescoes to vintage musical instruments.

Overall, I would heartily advise anyone travelling to Modena or the surrounding area to pay a visit to Ghirlandina. Anyone interested in history, culture, or simply admiring breathtaking views of the lovely Italian countryside should visit this must-see destination, which is a true gem of Italian...

The Torre Civica, famously known as Ghirlandina, is one of Modena’s most iconic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site that beautifully complements the grandeur of the nearby Modena Cathedral. Torre Ghirlandina is an impressive landmark, both inside and out. We’re really glad we bought tickets to climb to the top—it was definitely worth it. The tower has a slight lean, which you can actually notice as you make your way up the stairs. The interior is fascinating, with the staircase winding up along the walls in a spiral pattern through all four sides, which was really unique and fun to experience. At the top, there’s a panoramic viewpoint offering stunning views of the city from every direction. A truly amazing experience and one I’d highly recommend!

This wonderful marble tower stands next to the cathedral in Modena's main square. For the princely sum of €3 you can enter and climb almost to the top where a friendly guide will explain the history of the tower and answer any questions. Due to COVID you need to book your entrance time by phone or on-line. It was originally built in 1189, and then extended to its current height during renovations of the cathedral between the 13th and 15th centuries. In fact the lower part is in a different style to the higher.
