The castle of Charles V is a fort built on the seashore during the Spanish domination protection of the entrance of the ancient port, on the north-east corner of the city walls of Monopoli. It constitutes the key element of the system of urban fortifications. Currently, the sections of the city walls south of the castle are visible and largely restored to the Cathedral, including the bastions of Santa Maria, Pappacenere and the Cathedral.

Going inside the castle does not wort it. It is a bit expensive and you do not get much for that prize. On the other side, a walk around it and alongside the sea is a much more worthy experience for everyone. Amazing view the the water, with not that many people alongside the path. The old town is mesmerising. I spent a few days in Monopoli, and it was the best places overall (the surrounding).

Il castello di Monopoli, costruito sulla striscia di terra più avanzata rispetto al mare, faceva parte del sistema di fortificazione costiera, voluto da Carlo V in Puglia, i lavori terminarono nell'anno 1552. Il castello ha la forma pentagonale con torri negli angoli, tipica dei fortilizi cinquecenteschi, ma sembra abbia incorporato una torre cilindrica preesistente, di forma romana, che conferisce un rilievo singolare all'ingresso e alla facciata stessa. Incorporati risultano anche i sotterranei, che comprendono tra l'altro l'antica chiesa basiliana di San Nicola della Pinna, divenuta la chiesa della fortezza. Si chiamava così perché era sulla punta (pinna) della penisola che sporge sul mare. Circondato dal mare su tre lati, il quarto era protetto da un fossato, oggi non più esistente. Prima di diventare un carcere, a partire dal secolo scorso e fino agli anni Cinquanta di questo, il castello fu il palazzo della più alta autorità militare in questa città.

Tipica fortezza cinquecentesca il castello di Monopoli si presenta nel suo aspetto attuale dopo i profondi lavori di restauro eseguiti fra gli anni 80 e 90 del novecento. Esso incorpora una preesistente torre cilindrica che ne costituisce l'ingresso, mentre nei sotterranei una chiesa cripta basiliana dedicata a San Nicola riaperta e recuperata negli ultimi anni. Sede di mostre ed eventi culturali tutto l'anno. Potendo salire sulla terrazza si può godere di una vista particolare della città e del mare, al piano banchina invece si trova la così detta "Sala delle armi" dove si ammirano alcuni esemplari di cannoni, ancore antiche e altri reperti. Sulla parete che guarda verso il porto si può vedere il bassorilievo e la lapide che ricorda il salvataggio dei naufraghi del traghetto greco Heleanna nell'agosto 1971 da parte dei pescatori monopolitani.

Can't criticise the architecture, although a lot of it was closed on the day of visit. It was hosting a picasso esque display when we went.and was gallery quiet. Probably is worth the 10 euro entry fee (given the age and upkeep costs) but it would have been nice to see kore

Absolutely scam. You couldn't enter to the top roof and the lowest level. Don't waste your money, just skip it, because you won't see anything. No view points, only small windows. Better choice if you wlak around the port.

The Castle of Charles V, also known as the Castello di Lecce, is a castle in Lecce, Italy. It was first built in the Middle Ages, and was strengthened by Charles V in 1539, to a design by the architect Gian Giacomo dell’Acaya.
