Years ago I often visited the Mausoleum, there was a silence there that induced you to meditation and insight in a special way.
I have visited Buddhist temples, millenary retreats, temples and mausoleums of all types and sizes and I have never felt the same as in this place. A few days ago I returned to Ravenna and went to visit it, the mausoleum from afar looks neglected, the outside of the vault completely flooded with yellow lichen. That initial disappointment worsed when I entered the ground floor and saw some speakers playing music, this also happened on the upper floor.
I left there saddened, aware of what could only be a serious lack of interest or respect from the responsible authority for this unique place. If they wanted to make it more "suggestive" they could have played with the interior lighting, but in no case could they have added music, it is like entering the Taj Mahal and hearing Beethoven playing, a...
Read moreMausoleum itself is very impressive and contrasts nicely with other main sites in Ravenna. surrounded by a nice park it creates a fitting atmosphere for a tomb of a great king. Inside is extremely underwhelming, very bare bones. No decorations, just bare walls and and empty and damaged sarchophagus. So buying a ticket to visit is not worth it. You can the see entire thing from the park, beyond the fence.
Site is within walking distance from the city center (but there is also parking, if you wneed it) and best way to visit is after a day of admiring mosaics at other sites. Park allows you to relax and the muted exterior is a stark contrast to vibrant mosaics elsewhere. and being open all the time gives you an opportunity to visit it after other...

Yes, she still sold us a ticket at 12:59, but telling us that we couldn't use the restrooms anymore or closing the shop at 13:00 while the mausoleum is accessible until 13:30 is unacceptable.
As to the other tourists, don't expect too much of this mausoleum. It's definitely not as visually spectacular as other monuments in Ravenna (the interior is even meh without any mosaics or frescoes). In fact, read up about this mausoleum in advance before deciding whether it is worth the detour (as it is outside of the...
