The Cervara Abbey is private property despite representing considerable historical and cultural value for every European and Italian citizen (it was built in 1361 and hosted Benedictine monks, three popes, St. Catherine of Siena, the imprisonment of the French king Francis I). For this reason, visits are expensive and limited to just two Sundays in a few months of the year. We recommend that the European Union and the Italian state initiate a legal process for the public re-appropriation of this property.
