The Fontana delle Tette, located in Treviso, is an ancient sculpted fountain that has a curious history. During the domination of the Republic of Venice, this fountain poured white and red wine on the occasion of particular celebrations. Its name, translated into English, means “The Fountain of Tits”. The fountain was built in 1559 on the orders of Alvise Da Ponte, mayor of Treviso, following a severe drought that hit the city and the surrounding countryside. In honor of each new Podestà ( a chief magistrate of a medieval Italian town) the fountain gushed red wine from one breast and white wine from the other. All citizens could drink for free for three days during these celebrations. The original fountain was located inside the Palazzo Pretorio, in via Calmaggiore. Today, a copy of the original sculpture is placed in the courtyard of Palazzo Zignoli, while the original is preserved under the portico of Palazzo dei Trecento. The Fountain of Tits represents a curious and fascinating piece of history, testimony to past times and unique traditions. 🍷🍇 Visited...
