🇮🇹 Could Varenna be one of the most picturesque and traditional village in Lake Como? Let me know what you think? This small village is so colourful where you can still breathe in the traditions of yesteryear. A visit to Varenna is a must if you are in Milan or one of the central towns on the lake such as Bellagio, Menaggio or Tremezzina Varenna is home to some of the most elegant villas with botanical gardens (such as Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi) and beautiful walks between history and nature (Castle of Vezio and Sentiero del Viandante). TIPS FOR TRAVELLING: - The small alleys are full of steps, so make sure to wear a comfortable pair of shoes. - A visit to Villa Monastero is definitely one of the best things to do in Varenna. The cost of a regular ticket is €10. - Adjacent to Villa Monastero is Villa Cipressi, a 4-star hotel. The complex is surrounded by centuries-old terraced gardens that reach the shores of Lake Como, a visit is a must! The cost of a regular ticket is €8 (€19 for the combined ticket that includes admission to Villa Monastero). - Varenna’s pier is located in Via Imbarcadero where you can catch boats to any towns on the lake (as anticipated, central lake towns such as Bellagio, Menaggio, and Tremezzo are only 10-15 minutes away by boat). - Visit the Church of San Giorgio dating back to 1313, the church has so many beautiful paintings inside. - If anything, simply take the time to wander around Varenna’s town centre & enjoy its authentic Italian vibe. - Lake Como and its little villages can get very busy during peak season, so try visiting during the shoulder months. Why you should be based in Varenna when visiting Lake Como 👇 Like many, we only had a weekend at Lake Como so convenience was everything. Directly from Milan by train, you can either get off at Lake Como or Varenna. We chose to stay at Varenna due to accessibility to other towns by ferry. At Varenna, you can easily reach the trifecta of towns including Bellagio and Menaggio by ferry. Once there, there are an array of activities including ✨Boat hire ✨ Visit the beautiful Villa Monastero, a 2km long botanic garden along the shores) and Hotel Villa Cipressi ✨ Hike to Vezio Castle which offers panoramic views to Varenna ✨ Grab a gelato or a drink by the adunbance of lakeside cafes Top tip: there are 16 trains daily from Milan Centrale to Varenna so be sure to plan ahead Are you adding Lake Como to your list of places to visit? 📹: @dennesychicken —————————— #lakecomo #varenna #italytravel #italy_creative_pictures #italytour #italy_ig #italylovers #italytourism #italyphoto #italytrip #travelsitaly #italygram #letsgosomewherenew #topeuropephotos #topeuropephoto #europe_vacations #europedestinations #allroadsleadtorome #girltravel #shetravels #shetravelz #bucketlistadventures #cntraveler #darlingescapes #prettylittletripstogo #prettycity #italy_vacations #lovetotraveltheworld

A magical place but dogs are not allowed Wear proper shoes with a non-slippery sole to get up and down without any fear. Be advised that the walk way up to the castle is very steep and not suitable for buggies or people who have problems walking. Especially when it has rained the little rocks are very slippery, especially when walking down to the ferry or the city of Varenna. So better to wear proper shoes and a walking stick might help as well. And take water with you when going up. You might need it for the very steep parts. Be advised that no dogs are allowed. Either the dog can wait at the fence or with a person at the little bistro. The bistro is nice and offers good coffee and snacks and warm meals (warm meals only until 4 pm). The entrance fee is 5 Euros and from my opinion it is worth it. The view and the exhibition is awesome. The little prison is good and the highlight is the view from the tower. The ghosts everywhere make that place magical. Duration for seeing everything: Depends how crowded it is. Usually between 40min and 1 hour. But you can take as much time as you want. During weekdays it is less crowded.

The views of Lake Como from here are really worth the hike! We walked the route from Villa Monastero which took around 40/45 minutes. This starts from the Villa on the left hand side of the road, up past a multi storey car park and just keep walking up until you reach Vezio. I would recommend starting the walk around 9am to avoid the sun and to get there for 10am when it opens. This route is quite uneven, steep in places and sometimes doesn’t look like a walking route at all so some good hiking shoes would be recommended. There are a lot of really great views on this walk up compared to the walk from the Ferry port. We walked back down the Ferry port route but this is a very steep cobble stone path so again good shoes needed as it can be slippery in places. This took about 20 minutes. The tickets are 5€ per adult and you can buy them when you arrive. There is a little cafe which sells hot and cold drinks and food and a toilet. The castle is not very big and won’t take long to look around but it’s a great spot to look over the view.
