Il Cavatappi is one of the best restaurants that my husband and I had the pleasure of eating at during our trip through Italy. Il Cavatappi is nestled between some of the oldest buildings in Varenna, which (combined with the decorations and service) helped give the restaurant a very romantic vibe. The food was extremely fresh, and that applied to every dish we ate (antipasti, pasta, meat, dolci). I ordered a pasta dish (which I believe was made using a type of pasta flour traditional to the area) and both the pasta itself and the accompanying sauce tasted like something you would be hard pressed to find outside of Italy (and even Varenna). The sauce was extremely special, because it was made with fresh fish ragout using fish caught in the Lake Como area. My husband ordered one of the steaks, and it was honestly superior to the steak we tried in Florence. The Caprese was a show stopper, and our dolci was extremely good as well. Overall, Il Cavatappi is definitely a restaurant you should make time to check out when you come to Varenna! This was one of the best dinners we had in all of Italy, and I strongly recommend checking it out if you're in or around Varenna. The only thing I want to note is that it books up fast (it will book up reservations at least 4-6 weeks in advance); you can book via email, but you'll want to make sure you don't wait too long. If you do come as a walk-in, you will get to sit in one of their (very romantic) outdoor seats, but please note that they have a small number of tables and limited capacity. The owner doesn't want any of his patrons to rush (and dinners can take upwards of 2 hours if you go for multiple courses), so he will cut off the wait list fairly early in the evening. If you want to do walk-in, I'd recommend arriving sometime before 6:30pm at least.

I only review the places I like. Here I'll make an exception. WE LOVED IT. After sitting outside 40 minutes before we expected it to open, exhausted after a day in the Italian sun, we discovered our laziness had rewarded us with one of the only tables you can't reserve. But as the queue grew outside the door, we realised our laziness had been a stroke of genius, as inside had been reserved for the next two weeks. When the doors did finally open, we were greeted by the friendliest Italian face of our trip, who greeted us with 'buona sera' as 'ciao' is only for friends. But friends we would quickly become, as he talked us through the history and experiences of the oldest restaurant in Varenna. We then ordered the duck ragout and tortelloni and were left speechless by the flavours of lake Como and wishing that we'd become cows and have four more stomachs to fill with the divine food that was produced. Alas we only had the one stomach, shrunken in the Italian summer heat and could only fit a small desert in after. But what a desert it was. We had a pistachio and chocolate souffle and tiramisu, that has caused an irreparable conflict over which was better. (It was the soufflé, but don't tell my fiance). We fully recommend you reserve one of the many exclusive tables and become one of the few to experience Il Cavatappi.

A fine little restaurant with an elegant interior and pleasant traditional outside under the 16thC arches...all very smart and tastefully put together...and so was the food...a culinary delight. Not only is this what it purports to be a ... r e s t a u r a n t...yep not only with a proper kitchen (visitors beware microwaved food from little plastic trays is what you can end up with!! ) but with proper chefs who know what to do with ingredients. I now know the Italians do not eat vegetables...they must have invented contorni for the British Italian restaurants but chef agreed to cook some baby spinach for me and I got a fabulous version of a 'proper' British meal ...meat and 2 veg....and then a heavenly panna cotta. Very happy with this experience. The trick is to turn up for lunch at 12 noon....no reservations taken for lunch. I think they close on Wednesdays.

We had a wonderful dining experience at Cavatappi in Varenna! We sat inside as the evening was slightly chilly. I had the house red wine by the glass and my wife had the house white. They were both good. They started us out with a small complimentary appetizer, prosciutto and mozzarella. For first course, I had the ravioli stuffed with spinach and ricotta, which was delicious. My wife had the tagliatelle with duck ragu. Her dish was fantastic, one of the most flavorful dishes I’ve ever tasted. Candidly, I ate most of hers’. 😂 We shared the second course, which was the pistachio crusted salmon. It was very good with the fresh roasted tomatoes. Finally, we ended with a tiramisu. I wouldn’t say it was the best one I’ve ever had but it satisfied my sweet tooth. We would definitely recommend when visiting Varenna!!

Came for lunch in late April and I'm glad I did! The food was delicious and all the staff were friendly and helpful. I didn't have a reservation but I waited to see if they had available tables right when they opened. I got lucky, because soon after, the restaurant was full (its very small) and they had to turn people away. A few of those groups made reservations for lunch and dinner on following days, so I highly recommend reserving in advance if you can (they do take solo diners!). The grilled octopus was fabulous and the duck ragu was flavorful. The panna cotta was more solid than I prefer but still hit the spot for dessert. If you don't finish your wine, they'll cork it for you. Good portions, reasonable prices, warm ambiance and wonderful service. I would definitely come again!

Very clean and friendly restaurant and I love that they honor local ingredients. They keep their bathroom very clean too! The only thing is that the food is too salty for me. I had the spinach ravioli. The sauce is very delicious. They claim the filling contains only ricotta cheese and spinach, however, the filling tastes very starchy(like breadcrumbs or something) to me. The salted and dried lake fish is very interesting and unique. Again it is a bit too salty. I think it might be improved if it were first soaked in water (to reduce saltiness) and then baked. This way, the remaining fishbone will also become crispy and less of a problem.
