While staying in Bellagio, we took the ferry over to Varenna. After walking around and touring the town, we stopped here for lunch. It has beautiful views of Lake Como. It was cloudy the day we went, the pictures could have been much better on a sunny day. Most of the tables are outside and it looks like they had two or three inside. It was a short wait about 10 minutes. The staff was very friendly and spoke both English and Italian. No coperto here. The food was very good. I had the penne with tomato sauce, basil, and almond. It was whole wheat pasta but I honestly couldn't taste the difference. The sauce is very good with only the slight hint of almond. Never had that with my pasta before, it was a nice complement. I tried a little of my wife's pappardelle with mushroom. It was very creamy and not overloaded with mushrooms. Between the food, service, and beautiful views this was a great choice. I would definitely come here again.

Highly recommend - you will not regret! Menu is made up of an eclectic array of dishes. We, however, kept it fairly simple and decided to go for the bruschetta with sardines, a tuna wrap (highly recommend - it was bursting with flavour!) and the baked aubergines in tomato and cheese - thoroughly enjoyed and all the dishes fresh and incredibly flavoursome. They have one of the most extensive coffee menus I’ve come across - from Moroccan to Irish to Baileys! I opted for the Baileys, which was creamy and delicious. We also ordered a few cocktails and they were exquisite. Service was spectacular compared to the Bar a little further up (whose service were appalling). This cute cafe has a great view of the lake, it’s a must on your visit to Varenna, Lake Como.

The best things about this cafe are 1.) it’s location next to the water and 2.) they are open during the middle of the day while many other places are closed. We ordered three pasta dishes which were all disappointing; the sauces were plain, and the texture of the noodles was not up to the Italian standard we’ve become accustomed to. The service was friendly and quick although we did have to wait about 15 minutes for a table at 3pm on a Monday. Overall, if you want to enjoy a cappuccino and take in the beautiful view, we would recommend it. Otherwise, there are other restaurants in Varenna with much better food.

Wonderful drinks and dishes for reasonable prices. Favorite dish was the lasagna (was so delicious we forgot to take a picture!). We went here everyday for lunch during our stay in Varenna. The place gets quiet busy so props to the waitresses working hard to serve customers while still remaining so pleasant. The seating is outdoors nearly feet from the lake waters with a wonderful view while you enjoy your meal. Do be careful there are two restaurants served by the outdoor seating, they are divided by the potted plants - ensure you are sitting at the Caffe Varenna and not the next door restaurant.

Very complex feelings about this place. Pasta was very good but they got our order wrong. We ordered bruschetta without anchovis but got bruschettas with some anchovis. They had tried to pick them off after putting it, which I found super unprofessional. It tasted like anchovis all the way. We did get new bruschettas but had to pay for it even though the waitress (who was supernice but didn't speak or understand english) said we didn't have to pay for starters. The cashier was rude about it. Food was otherwise good but didn't enjoy the service at all.

The owner (men with longer gray hair) was so rude to us! We wanted to open the door to restaurant and he started taping his forehead and said “you really think it’s open?!”. We were really confused because opening hours on google are 9am to 1am. I said “why are you so rude to us?” and he started to make fun of us and was making faces :(. It was really disappointing, I hope someone will see this before going there and will decide to not. Awful behaviour! 😡
