This is the best meal we have had in Italy by far. Varenna is full of tourist traps and it can be quite difficult to tell from the ratings on Google which places are serving real cuisine and which places are able to trick tourists into thinking it's real. La Veranda is not only serving real cuisine but the prices are fantastic, the view was spectacular, and the service was excellent. The lake fish mousse with shaved pears was incredible. Our waiter have us an excellent wine pairing suggestion. It was one of my favorite white wines I've ever had. We moved on to a primi pasta. I had a fried white fish on risotto and my wife had a spaghetti with caviar sauce. Both were excellent but the risotto was absolutely outstanding. Again the wine pairing was perfect, especially with the sunset view of Menaggio in the distance. We decided to go big and get another course because the food was so good. We may have surprised them a bit with that decision but I had tried to explain on arrival that we were wanting a multi course meal. There was a slight language barrier with our ordering, but not in any way that took away from the experience. My wife had a breaded pesto lake fish and I had a beef filet cooked rare with a wine ju and Italian cheese sauce. Our waiter recommended a Sardinian Syrah blend to go with the beef and it was again perfect. The beef itself was cooked perfectly rare, extremely tender and the sauce was excellent. The lake fish was excellent as well, especially with the lime mayonnaise. We got an apple tart for dessert and a dessert wine each. The red desert wine Sangue Di Giuda was very memorable. I enjoy sweet desert wine so maybe not for everyone but it was unlike any wine I've ever had, again at our waiters recommendation. Obviously with a four course meal that we created ourselves off the menu we left very well fed and with a relatively substantial bill, but for the quality and the location I was extremely pleased with the total cost. I expected a significant surcharge for being in the most beautiful location on earth but the price was actually cheaper than a meal of equal caliber anywhere else in the world. I absolutely recommend this place. Nothing has come even close to it's quality for the duration of our trip.

Ristorante La Veranda Dei Pescatori On our last day in Bellagio, we took the ferry to Varenna to catch the train to Milan. Our son had found a restaurant next to the train station that he said was highly rated. The weather was nice, so, we hiked the streets and up the hill to Ristorante La Veranda Dei Pescatori. The timing was perfect as they had just opened. They seated us at a nice table overlooking the lake and the train station below. They started by bringing us some water and a sparkling wine sample. English is spoken fairly well. We ordered, fresh fish from Como, fish gnocchi, as well as a potato and cheese gnocchi. The view is really spectacular from above and provided some nice picture moments and to enjoy some wine while we waited for the food to be prepared. When the food arrived, the first taste from each dish was simply, “Wow”, as the food was delicious. After the meal, an apple strudel dessert was called for, and it too was the best. We were all set to walk back down the hill and back up the serpentine road to the train station, and again, the restaurant solved the problem by having a couple of 3 wheeled tuk-tuks to take you to the train or to the ferry. The bottom line from us, Service - Excellent, with multiple servers to take care of any needs. Food - Outstanding. Location - Close to the ferry and train station. Excellent views. Highly recommend. Caio!

Varenna is a small village, so an opening of a new restaurant is quite the occasion. In this case, 'new' isn't exactely the case as Davide has just moved premises to his current perch overlooking Lake Como with the stunning Monte Rosa and the lake framing the perfect backdrop. With a choice of indoor dining or outdoor in the garden, its' good to have choice....the only restaurant in Varenna that offers a true and spacious 'al fresco' dining experience. Plenty of space here so you will not be crushed up against your fellow diner here. So to the food on offer....without doubt, now the best lake fish restaurant in the area. Our 'antipasti' was a selection of local meats and cheeses served with conserves and the chestnut honey was a wonderful addition. We had lake fish on a skewer as a 'primi' followed followed by risotto with lake perch as a main 'secondo'.Donatella's suggestion of white wine was a 'Lugana'...quite delicious.Desert 'dolci' consisted of homemade traditional fare such as 'tiramisu','panna cotta' and 'sorbet'. A truly excellent dining 'al fresco' experience I must say. Did I mention the shuttle service from the centre of Varenna ( 2 minutes to the restaurant)? Just another delightful touch this restaurant offers. With excellent service put 'La Veranda dei Pescatore' to the top of your list before word gets out!

An experience of plus and minuses. The good stuff: Absolutely gorgeous view over the lake, unparalleled by any other in the neighbourhood. The staff is kind, service is rapid, the free shuttle service (if you have a reservation) between the station definitely is a huge plus. Furthermore the restaurant looks nice and they think of little details like blankets for if you are cold. The less good stuff: The food was not on the level we expected it to be. We had 2 menus (one meat one fish) but we replaced one gnocchi with the ravioli. The meat starter was okay, the gnocchi was decent (unfortunately the staff made a mistake and brought the gnocchi of the meat menu while we requested that one to be replaced with the ravioli, but hey, accidents happen), the meat main was also okay, the tiramisu we ordered after was a bit meh. The fish starter was nice, the ravioli was okay, but the fish itself was not good enough. I would not recommend at all. The trio of sorbet ice cream after was nice though, with the green apple sorbet as a highlight. Maybe because all other details were so good, we just had too high expectations which led to be a bit of a disappointment. The service compensated for it a bit. We paid +- €100 for which in my opinion we could have expected more for. Reservation recommended!

If you’re looking for a dining experience that combines mouth-watering cuisine with a dash of comedic heroism, look no further than La Veranda dei Pescatori! This place isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a culinary comedy club where the food is so good, you might just forget your own name! From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with the kind of warmth that feels like a giant hug from your favorite aunt—if your aunt happened to be a Michelin-starred chef! The menu was a treasure trove of delights; every dish was a flavor explosion that had us singing praises louder than a karaoke night gone wrong. But the real kicker? When our dinner ended and we discovered we were stranded without a ride home, it felt like a scene from a sitcom. Enter Reno and Debora: the dynamic duo of hospitality! They sprang into action like superheroes, making calls to every taxi service imaginable. Seriously, I half-expected them to pull out a bat signal for a cab! After an hour of fruitless calls (and a few laughs about our increasingly absurd situation), they didn’t just offer us a ride—they insisted! Picture this: two lovely hosts offering to drive us an hour back to our hotel after we’d just devoured enough pasta to fuel a small army. Talk about service above and beyond! Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, they miraculously managed to snag us a black Mercedes. It was like watching a magician pull a rabbit out of a hat, only this time it was a sleek ride instead of a bunny. So, if you want not just a meal, but an experience filled with great food, laughter, and the kind of hospitality that could make even the grumpiest of travelers crack a smile, La Veranda dei Pescatori is your place. Reno and Debora, we salute you! And if you’re ever in need of a ride, just ask for the “Reno and Debora Express”—they come highly recommended! 🍽️🚖✨

I was here on what looked like a slow night. Many tables were free the entire time I was there. Yet I was seated on the row furthest from the view, and I felt as though they barely wanted me there (maybe because I was a table of one?). Service was very inattentive. I had to ask for a second glass of wine three separate times. Asked for an ashtray four times. The guy who drives the tuktuk (which, don’t get me wrong, is a great benefit), acted like he was annoyed to pick me up and even worse when it was time to leave. I actually had to ask “is there a problem?” and I was mostly speaking Italian, although I’m sure it wasn’t perfect, I was trying. I just felt like I was an afterthought, like they really didn’t even want me there. They seemed like they needed more staff. The waiter I mostly interacted with was nice but it was just a little uncomfortable. They brought an amuse bouche which is great but they were so hurried that the guy actually told me about it as I was headed to the restroom, then just left it at the table. I wanted to try this place because I had never been there, but I don’t think I will be back. There are plenty of other places in Varenna that I can spend €100+ per person without feeling like a burden or second class citizen. I wish them well, though!
