JR東日本の総武本線の各駅停車駅。 東千葉駅の北口と南口を繋ぐ為に橋上化され、椿森陸橋の連絡通路とも繋がれています。 かつてこの駅の西側に初代の千葉駅がありましたが、東京方面からの特急・急行列車を内房・外房方面へ直通運転に対処する為に、スイッチバックで運行していた旧千葉駅を現在の千葉駅の位置に移設しました。移設跡地は現在の千葉市民会館へ、住民の要望で代替駅として新設された駅が現在の東千葉駅にあたります。

現在は椿森陸橋の下にあり、6〜8両編成の各駅電車しか停車しないため、日中時間帯は40分位次発の電車が来ない事もあります。必ずしも使い勝手が良い駅ではありません。 栄町・要町・院内町・祐光町へ行かれる方は千葉駅よりも当駅で降りた方が近いでしょう。
