Subject: Complaint and Suggestions Regarding Staff Service Attitude at Chiba City Museum of Art

Dear Management of Chiba City Museum of Art,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction regarding my recent visit to your museum on October 22, 2024, at 10:30 AM, where I encountered some unpleasant experiences that I hope you will take into consideration for improvement.

While making my way from the 9th floor to the 8th floor via the stairs, I was abruptly stopped by a female staff member. She was stationed at the membership application desk on the 8th floor, wearing a uniform but without a name tag. As an international visitor unfamiliar with the layout of the museum, I made a wrong turn due to the lack of multilingual signage, which is understandable. However, the attitude of this staff member was extremely unprofessional and lacked basic courtesy. Rather than providing correct guidance, she treated us in a rude and hostile manner, which is entirely inconsistent with the cultural atmosphere and service quality that a museum should embody. In a situation where communication was futile, she even resorted to extreme measures by calling security, which only intensified our discomfort.

I must emphasize that such a service attitude severely damages the reputation of your museum and detracts from the experience of foreign visitors. As a venue for promoting Japanese art and culture, the museum should provide a warm and welcoming environment rather than making international visitors feel unwelcome and hostile.

On a positive note, I would like to mention the female staff member I encountered on the first floor, who was very polite and professional. She provided excellent service, which somewhat alleviated our earlier negative experience. Her behavior deserves commendation and reflects the positive standards of service that your museum should strive for.

Given the circumstances, I kindly request that your museum investigate this matter and take necessary steps to enhance staff service attitudes and professional training. I believe that through improvements in service, your museum can provide a more enjoyable artistic experience for all visitors.

Lovely museum, and not too far of a walk from the Chiba Urban Monorail station. The permanent collection area is a tad small, but the special exhibition took up several floors and was very fun to explore. There was a lot more English on the signs than some other museums I've visited in Japan, and the special exhibition provided multilingual titles and descriptions via a QR code.

The building itself used to be a bank that was built in the 1920s. The front room/gallery space still has the original look with tall ceilings and columns. The first floor also has a small cafe and a museum shop.

In addition to the main galleries, the museum also has a small children's and art book library you can peruse, a room to host classes and activities for kids, a large workshop, and a few smaller studio spaces that can be rented for personal use. One of the upper floors consisted of a lecture hall and citizens' galleries, though they were closed...

【 2025/06/21(土)再訪 】 2025/5/30(金)〜7/21(月㊗️)の期間、開催されている企画展→開館30周年記念「江戸の名プロデューサー 蔦屋重三郎と浮世絵のキセキ」(8階企画展示室)と、同時開催の「日本美術とあゆむ-若冲(じゃくちゅう)・蕭白(しょうはく)から新版画まで」(7階企画展示室)を拝観しました。

8階の浮世絵では、喜多川歌麿(きたがわ うたまろ)、東洲斎写楽(とうしゅうさい しゃらく)、鳥文斎栄之(ちょうぶんさい えいし)、葛飾北斎(かつしか ほくさい)、渓斎英泉(けいさい えいせん) etc…

7階の日本美術では、伊藤若冲(いとう じゃくちゅう)、長澤蘆雪(ながさわ ろせつ)、曾我蕭白(そが しょうはく)、鈴木其一(すずき きいつ) etc…

とても見応えがあり👀✨、8階→7階→5階の常設展示室と、一通り見終えて時間を確認したら、なんと3時間半も滞在していました😅💦

帰りがけに1階のミュージアムショップで、葛飾北斎の「凱風快晴」、鈴木其一の「芒図屏風」、伊藤若冲、東海道五十三次ベスト5、などのクリアファイルを購入しました❗️

【 2024/07/06(土)再訪 】 千葉市美術館の夏の企画展「岡本秋暉 百花百鳥に挑んだ江戸の絵師-摘水軒コレクションを中心に-」と「江戸絵画縦横無尽！摘水軒コレクション名品展」の2本立てを拝観しました。開催期間は2024年6/25(金)〜8/25(日)までです。

岡本秋暉(おかもと しゅうき：1807-1862)は孔雀の名手として名を馳せた江戸後期の画人であり、一方で小田原藩・大久保家に仕える藩士としての顔も持ち、江戸藩邸に勤めながら、精力的に制作を続けたそうです。

摘水軒(てきすいけん)コレクションは、千葉県柏市にある摘水軒記念文化振興財団が所蔵するコレクションで、同財団のルーツである寺嶋家(てらじまけ)は江戸時代に柏村の名主を務め、水戸街道沿いの居宅「摘翠軒(てきすいけん)」には学者や知識人、絵師などの文化人が訪れ、文化サロン的な役割を果たしていたそうです。

写真撮影OKの展示品も多く、それ以外に、清の絵師・沈南蘋(しんなんぴん)の「鶴鹿図」や伊藤若冲の「旭日松鶴図」なども展示されていて、動物好きな自分にとって、とても良い企画展でした❗️👍

1階にチケット売場は無く、エレベーター🛗で8階へ上がって拝観料を支払う(入館チケットを購入する)というシステムで、8階→7階という順に企画展示室内を見る形になっていて、館内はとても空いていましたが、total：約2時間半、じっくり見させていただきました👀

外は最高気温：30℃を超える暑い日だったので😱💦、千葉駅から歩いて千葉市美術館に着いた時には汗だくでしたが💦、館内は冷房がガンガンに効いていて涼むことが出来ました❗️✨😁👍 ※最後のほうは少し寒く感じてしまうほど冷房が効いているので、冷房が苦手な人はカーディガンや長袖シャツなどの羽織るものを持参して展示室内に入ったほうが良いかもしれません😅💦

※千葉駅からは徒歩約20分かかりますが🚶💦、自分は30分くらいは余裕で徒歩圏内です❗️ 京成線の千葉中央駅からだと、徒歩約10分です🚶

【 2024/01/08(月)㊗️拝観 】 千葉神社⛩️にて参拝後（^人^）、13時過ぎに訪問。千葉神社から千葉市美術館までは徒歩🚶約5分で、千葉駅から美術館までは徒歩🚶約20分。 2024年1/6(土)〜3/3(日)の期間、開催されている企画展「サムライ、浮世絵師になる！鳥文斎栄之展」を拝観しました。

旗本出身という異色の出自(しゅつじ)をもち、美人画のみならず幅広い画題で人気を得た浮世絵師「鳥文斎栄之(ちょうぶんさい えいし：1756-1829)」は、浮世絵の黄金期とも称される天明〜寛政期(1781-1801)に、同時代の喜多川歌麿(きたがわ うたまろ：1753？-1806)と拮抗して活躍したそうです。

今日にその名が知られていないのは、多くの作品が海外に流出したため、国内にあまり作品がなく、見る機会が少なく注目されてきませんでしたが、当時の人気も高かったことがうかがえ、重要な浮世絵師とのことです。

十代将軍徳川家治(1737-1786)は絵を描くことを好んでいたと伝えられていて、当初、将軍のために絵具を用意する「絵具方」という役目を務めた栄之は、御用絵師狩野栄川院典信(かのうえいせんいんみちのぶ：1730-1790)に絵を学び、狩野派の絵師として経歴を続けることも可能だったはずですが、天明6年(1786)に家治が逝去(せいきょ)後は本格的に浮世絵師として活躍するようになり、やがて武士の身分を離れ、サムライ(刀⚔️)から浮世絵師(筆🖌️)へ転身したそうです。

企画展示室は7階と8階で、8階が受付(チケット購入)となっています。企画展示室内は基本的に撮影禁止みたいですが、7階・8階それぞれ2点ずつ撮影OKマークが付いた展示品がありました❗️✨😁👍

8階の展示室を見終えた時点でお腹が空いたので、1階のカフェでエビピラフとホットラテをいただきました❗️😋 それからエレベーターで7階へ行き、7階展示室→ 5階の常設展示室と鑑賞させていただきました。食事も含め、約3時間滞在してしまいましたが😅💦、美人画や吉原の遊女を題材にした作品がたくさんありましたので、目👀の保養になりました❗️😍 中でも特に日中🇯🇵🇨🇳それぞれの三大美人→小野小町、清少納言、紫式部、楊貴妃などが描かれた屏風が良かったです❗️✨😍💕

展示室内は空いていましたので、展示品一つ一つ、解説ボードを読みながらゆっくりじっくり👀鑑賞することが出来ました❗️ ※メモを取りながら📝、とても熱心に鑑賞されてる方が居ましたので、一部見れなかった展示品もありますが😅💦、全体的にはとても満足しました❗️
