Chichibu Shrine — Attraction in Chichibu

秩父地方の総鎮守である神社です。12月初旬に開催される『秩父夜祭』は、秩父神社の例祭の一つであり、初詣に匹敵する賑わいを見せますが、祭りが開催されない日でも（それが平日であっても）参拝者は比較的多く、秩父観光の折等で参拝する人が多いように見られます。 最寄り駅は秩父鉄道の秩父駅ですが、西武秩父駅、及び御花畑駅からでも徒歩で行くには特に苦にならない距離です。 創建は3世紀後半から4世紀ごろとされていますが、定かではありません。少なくとも10世紀半ばまでは『秩父神社（あるいは知知夫神社）』という名称でしたが、律令制度の崩壊により秩父神社を支えた豪族の力が弱まり、代わりに秩父の妙見社（妙見菩薩を祀る社）が創成され、それが幕末まで続きます。明治時代の神仏分離により、名称が『秩父神社』に戻り、今に至ります。 境内はそれほど広くはなく、周遊するだけであれば1時間と要しません。この神社の見どころとしては、主に本殿の随所に飾られている左甚五郎の作とされるものを含む多くの彫刻と、水占いの2つでしょう。彫刻群は基本的に人の目線と同じところに飾られておらず、建物の上部にあります。境内を周遊すると彫刻の在り処のサインが立てられていますので、探してみましょう（社殿そのものが重要文化財であり、随時修復・維持作業が行われているため、見ることが出来ない場合があります）。境内には『柞の禊川（ならのみそぎがわ）』という小さな小川が流れており、かつてはそこで参拝前の身の清めに利用されていましたが、今は『水占い』として利用されています。札所で『水占い』を購入し、それをこの小川の水に浸すと、吉凶を占う文字が現れます。持ち帰り用の袋も用意されているので、参拝の際は試してみるといいでしょう。

This shrine is the general guardian of the Chichibu region. The "Chichibu Night Festival" held in early December is one of the annual festivals of Chichibu Shrine, and is as crowded as Hatsumode (New Year's visit to the shrine), but even on days when the festival is not held (even weekdays), there are a relatively large number of visitors. The nearest station is Chichibu Station on the Chichibu Railway Line, but it's not difficult to walk there from Seibu-Chichibu Station or Ohanabatake Station. It's said to have been founded in the late 3rd or 4th century, but this is not certain. The shrine was called "Chichibu Shrine" at least until the mid-10th century, but with the collapse of the Ritsuryo system, the power of the powerful families that supported Chichibu Shrine weakened, and Myokensha (a shrine dedicated to Myoken Bosatsu) was established in its place, which continued until the end of the Edo period. With the separation of Shinto and Buddhism during the Meiji era, the name was changed back to "Chichibu Shrine" and has remained so to this day. The shrine precincts are not very large, and it does not take more than an hour to walk around the grounds. The two main attractions of the shrine are the many sculptures throughout the main worship hall, including one attributed to Jingoro Hidari, and the "Water Fortune". The sculptures are generally not displayed at eye level, but rather at the top of the building. The shrine itself is an important cultural asset and is undergoing restoration and maintenance work from time to time, so you may not be able to see the sculptures. A small stream called "Narano-Misogi-gawa" flows through the precincts of the shrine, which used to be used for purification for visiting the shrine before, but is now used for "Water Fortune". If you purchase a "Water Fortune" at the ticket office and dip it in the water of the stream, a character that predicts good or bad luck will appear. This shrine near Chichibu Station was rebuilt by Tokugawa Ieyasu. A spring from Chichibu flows through the shrine grounds, and there is an interesting water fortune-telling ceremony in which characters appear when the shrine is dipped in the water. There is also an objet d'art lurking at the bottom of the clear water in the hand-watering basin. The four sides of the main shrine are decorated with magnificent carvings, and visitors can enjoy walking around the main shrine after praying. Among them is a parent's guide to child rearing, "Do not let the baby out of your skin," inscribed with the words, "A child is a treasure, a tiger for raising children," by the Edo period master craftsman Jingoro Sa. Don't let go of your infant's hand. Keep your eyes on the child. Don't let go of your heart...

数十年位前に、「秩父の夜祭り」に出掛けています。ごったがえす人の群れに入り込んでしまい、身動きが取りづらかったことと、燃え盛る松明などの炎の色が赤々としていたのを覚えています。 夜祭の常ならば、暗くなり始めた頃に儀式を終えた笠鉾や屋台等が、市内に繰り出されます。市内を曳き回す時、人々を熱気で包み、翌朝には神社にご帰還なはずです。 夜と松明の赤い炎と熱気によって、笠鉾や屋台曳きが醸し出す、または作り上げた独特な雰囲気に、祀り（祭）と祈りの神髄を感じ取るのかもしれません。 その当時は、こんな祭りがあるのか！？と、感動というよりも、不思議いっぱいの感想を抱いていたような気がします。

道路沿いに鳥居があり、一歩足を踏み入れると、ほっとする柔らかい空気感がありました。極彩色の華やかさは山の上の神社と同様です。（山の上の神社は、2002年頃に漆塗り換えや修理をしていますので、より鮮やかでした）比して、少し落ち着いた色合いでした。

人々が生活を営んでいるその場所にさりげなく鎮座しているように思われますが、一歩入ると、並みの神社ではないことが分かります。氏子たちの誇りを引き受けている神社であろうと思います。

秩父神社は、寳登山神社、三峯神社と共に秩父三社と言われています。
