The Yamasen Bridge Ruins, located near Lake Shikotsu in Chitose, Hokkaido, is a captivating historical site that beautifully combines industrial heritage with natural scenery. Built in 1899, this double Warren truss bridge was originally imported from England and first spanned the Sorachi River as the "First Sorachi River Bridge" on the Kamikawa Line of the Hokkaido Government Railway. In 1923, it was moved to its current location to serve the Oji Paper Company's light railway, which operated from 1908 until 1951. The name "Yamasen" comes from the "Yama Line," the nickname for the railway connecting Tomakomai to Lake Shikotsu. The bridge was donated to Chitose City in 1967 and underwent restoration starting in 1995, reopening to the public in 2007. It has been recognized for its historical and engineering significance, designated as a Heritage of Industrial Modernization and a Selected Civil Engineering Heritage.
