We had two nights at Lake Shikotsu Guest house, which is centrally located only minutes walk from the lake, and a very modern visitors information center, the guest house is a small traditional Japanese style with bamboo floors walls and very small rooms up a set of step stairs with tatarmi mats to sleep on it has very basic shared facilities, down stairs you sit on mats and cushions at low tables and join in the conversation with people from other nationalities setting around with a open fire place to keep you warm on cool nights, The manager is Japanese who speaks just enough english, we were lucky only a few people were staying there as the bamboo domantry style rooms have very little privacy or room to unpack and store you baggage. breakfast is available but is also very basic one boiled egg, one piece toast, small messo soup and a small bowel of rice and green tea. I enjoyed the lake were you can hire a swan paddle boat to experience the beautiful scenery and the many traditional japanese restauraunt near by, over all its a low budget back packer style...
