It's a small local museum with only one exhibition room, and perhaps because it's not large, it does not systematically exhibit the culture and nature of Ishigaki and the other Yaeyama Islands. It takes only about 30 minutes to go around the exhibits. The exhibits are divided into two main sections: one is the historical and cultural transition up to the present, and the other is the display of farm tools and tools that have taken root in daily life. Before that time, however, excavated earthenware (or a part of it) reminiscent of ancient times is on display. However, the number of these exhibits is not large, and the chronological transition is quite vague, suggesting that historical research is still in its infancy. Some of the exhibits can only be seen by actually visiting the time, place, or island, so I felt that the museum was established as an introductory facility for understanding the transition of Yaeyama's culture and history. Therefore, when you visit historical sites in Ishigaki, it might be better to stop by this museum first to know the outline and introduction, and then visit other places to...
Read moreIt's a small museum but packed with a wide range of Yaeyama traditions from pre-history to the daily life of Yaeyama Islanders. It's a fun place to see if you are a big fan of history and want to know more about Yaeyama traditions. Most explanations are in Japanese, but they put some books to explain a little in English. It is a good place to visit in the rain. They have three-car parking spaces directly in front of the main entrance. The ticket price is ¥200 for adults and ¥100 for kids....
Read moreSuper interesting museum! I went on a rainy day, and it was pretty chilly inside. There’s lots to see in the museum for how small it looks!! The exhibits themselves all have Japanese labels, but there are little stands situated around the museum with English and Chinese booklets explaining the exact same things. For 200 yen, definitely worth the 1-1.5 hours I...
