Would 100% recommend Matsumoto Castle! The castle itself is beautiful and you are able to go inside. There were good descriptions in English and the collection of firearms was so interesting. My favorites were the ‘secret’ guns. Also the view from the top is amazing. It really gives you a 360 view of the city.
There are also free English guided tours of Matsumoto Castle Park and the inside of the walls (they don’t go within the castle itself). It is staffed by volunteer retirees. Our guide Ken was so nice and informative! We had a really wonderful time learning about the Castle from him and chatting.
If you have a hard time with stairs be aware that there are many steep stairs that can be rather slippery. However, there is an attendant in each floor to remind you to be careful.
We toured Matsumoto as a stop on our way to the Mountains and it was a...

There are also several exhibition galleries inside - one covering weapons contemporary with the castle, and another containing domestic artefacts discovered during restoration work.
The internal staircases are extremely steep - in the two upper floors, up to 61 degrees. This will make access challenging for small children and impossible for those with impaired mobility.
A free volunteer English language guide service is available at busy times, but the guide will only accompany you around the exterior of the castle and to the gardens - they can’t enter the main...
Read moreThis castle was just beautiful! I was lucky enough to go on a spring day when it had just decided to snow, so we got a black castle with cherry blossom and snow... Stunning to say the least! The castle is incredible inside and beautifully preserved for over 400 years! If you're lucky enough to time it right and there's someone available, there are free guided tours with English speaking volunteers (no tips allowed, only a smile). They have an office at the south entrance. Masahiro was my guide and he was just brilliant! He showed me all around the castle and told me incredible facts that you might not get to know if you just read the info guides. Thank you for an incredible, fun and special afternoon... I'll be...
