Matsumoto has so many modern cool coffee shops, but this is a unique experience you have to add to your time here. A traditional Japanese home opened up for 500 yen/hour (with one drink) and a sweet for an additional 300 yen. Cash only. It’s very sweet and relaxed. I didn’t get a chance to get a little tour, but would love one when I come back. In order to preserve this traditional house (machiya) that has survived world war II, the owner opened this cozy café. It has a nice retro vibe and you can learn a lot about the l house and its garden, history and culture from the very friendly host. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming like a friend’s living room. Especially after my feet were so cold from visiting Matsumoto castle, it was so comfortable sitting under the traditional heated blanket (kotatsu). Amazing friendly owner who shares his story, he used to be japanese film maker for tv programme, he travels a lot and speaks good english. This cafe is his grandfathers house built in 18xx and passed down three generations. The cafe is modified from two guestrooms. The house has two floors and a total of seven bedrooms with garden.
