Ehime Museum of Art — Attraction in Matsuyama

What a shame! (Mozuミニチュア展)

This was my only day in Matsuyama for the Golden Week holidays. I planned on visiting this museum regardless of what the exhibition would be, but this was by far the worst possible exhibition to have organized during a busy tourist season such as GW. I have been a fan of Mozu, I’ve seen his work via the internet and was excited to see it in person, but that excitement waned quite quickly. The hour-long queue should have indicated that once I was in the exhibition space, I would have less time to wait to see the artworks. The opposite was true, the first queue outside merely foreshadowed the experience inside. The exhibition consisted mainly of miniatures, so it was hard to have any large number of people enjoy it at once. Inside the exhibition space, there was more waiting. The organizers should have expected this and mitigated the problem, but their uncreative staging led to an unending line between people waiting to see the work, being briefly amused by the miniatures and taking pictures, and then waiting another 10 minutes to experience the next piece, all the while knowing exactly what to expect, destroying the magic.

The nature of the medium, the subjects of the artwork, and the museum’s advertising campaign make parents of small children believe it’s appropriate for them. This is not the case. The two families in front of me with small children had a difficult time, as the queue bored the children and they became restless. As soon as they reached the first miniature set, they were transfixed and would press their face up to the glass, leaving smudges and fingerprints. Their parents had to pull them away to keep the queue moving, but only after a long enough time to delay the viewing for everyone else. This cycle would continue for the rest of my time there.

The actual time spent in the exhibition space looking at the artworks up close was dwarfed significantly by the amount of time waiting for them to be available. The museum organizers should respect their patrons’ time. Had they eliminated the empty space and allowed the first part of the exhibition to be held in a smaller space, the experience would have been quicker and I wouldn’t have felt like I wasted my time. I think the exhibition would have worked better if they reversed the flow of foot traffic. The most interesting parts of the exhibition (the miniatures) should be last, because by the time I finished that section, I was too tired to pay interest to the short film and Trick Doodle space.

That being said, I don’t believe any of this should diminish the quality and hard word of Mozu. Mozu-san, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry the exhibition was not as fun as you might have hoped. I blame my experience on the organizers and the venue, not your art, which was fun and creative. When I envisioned the exhibition in my head, I thought I would be transported like the aisles of IKEA, or Legoland, but I think the museum was ill-equipped to accommodate your sense of adventure and creativity.

If you go on a less busy day, it will be well worth it, but for the hundreds who have come during Golden Week, be prepared to spend more than 3 hours to...

The museum was displaying a fun and creative exhibit while I was in Matsuyama and I am glad I went. The information desk had English-friendly brochures which was incredibly thoughtful for their foreign tourists. They also have an attached coffee shop with lovely views which was a great place to stop and take a break while touring the city. 2022.11 ※愛媛県美術館へ行くために、 『松山市民会館に駐車は許可されてないです』

折角「空海、弘法大師様との時間の共有されたいならばルールは守るべきでは？」と個人的に思う。

2022.11 終了が近付き来場者が増えた。 県内はコロナもまた増えつつある。

昔、普賢院の、ご住職様に、 「お大師様は、いつの貴方の側にいらっしゃいます」

来場者の方々の側にもいらっしゃるのではないであろうか？

マナーは大切だと思う。

2022.11 #隣接カフェ ハンバーガー個人的に「愛媛県一感動の美味しさ」であった。 相変わらずスタッフ様全員が素晴らしい。

愛媛県美術館は、 レビュー後、各、入り口に検温とアルコール消毒の配置されたものの、意識高い方と、スルーされる呆れた人、両極端であった。

10月の展示より、 11月になり良くなった気がした。

たまたま車椅子の方が、いらっしゃり、同じ客でありながら拝見していて、お客様始め、各ヵ所の案内であり、管理の方々の臨機応変な対応に感動致しました。

来場者の方々は皆様、 「あ～必ず高野山に行かれたことがあるのであろうな」と話が耳に入り、来年の生誕祭は、 誰しも再び高野山へ行きたい思いを持ち、しかし明日が分からない日々…丁寧に観覧する姿に、また感動を頂きました。

但し、他の展覧会場では、 案内のイヤホンが無料だが、 今回は有料であり、 また申し訳ないが、地元アナウンサーによる案内ならば有り難みもなく、そこまで有料にされる意味が疑問であった。

11月20日までである。

ぜひ、それまでに、また行きたいものである。

#隣接するカフェは 星4つである。 スタッフさん全員が迅速で笑顔の対応であった。 星マイナス1は駐車場が付近にないことである。

2022.10 前回、来場者数に諦め再度行かせて頂いた。

体温計、アルコールの設置はあるが、 どなたも計測することはなく、消毒もなく入館。 相変わらずの人数に諦める。

「平日が比較的空いている」とのこと平日に変更予定である。

他の方の評価にもあったが… 確かに今までも展示の仕方が県外の美術館と比較すると、 残念な感じではある。 折角の期間限定である重要文化財等「何故このような並びなのか？」疑問に思う。

また「休刊日も変則的」と、お聞きした。 何とも不思議な話である。

2022.10 「高野山展」のため訪問

しかし人数制限なく、 かなりな来場者数。 アルコール消毒や体温測定もなく、 あくまでも自己責任のため、 念のため残念ながら展覧会は日を改める。

売店のみ利用させて頂いた。

しかしながら、 「愛媛県美術館」である。 コロナが増減する現在、入口にチェックして頂ける方が必要なのでは？ 人の多さに驚愕であった。

また、造り的には、お洒落ではあるが、 足元が余り良い状態ではなく、 健常者の方以外は、かなり遠回りしなければ入れないのではないだろうか？
