The atomic bomb explosion destroyed Urakami Cathedral, which was located about 500 meters from ground zero. Only a portion of the cathedral wall was left standing. Subsequently, a remnant of this wall was relocated to its present site at Hypocenter Park, serving as a reminder of the devastation caused by the bomb.

解体された浦上天主堂のごく一部が、ここに移されている。こんなわずかでは、何も伝わらない。原爆で破壊された浦上天主堂の残骸を、長崎市はそのまま現地に残そうとしたと言う。しかし、結局、保存のために移設したのがこれだけでは、保存の本気度を疑う。 もともと、この浦上地区は、江戸時代に隠れキリシタン（＝潜伏キリシタン）が住んでいたところ。浦上天主堂は、信仰が許されるようになってカトリック信者が建てた信仰の拠り所だった。それが、原爆によって破壊され、信者は再建を願った。しかし、長崎市全体ではカトリック信者は少数派で、長崎市の多数派は浦上天主堂の残骸を残すことをカトリック信者に求めた。しかし、信者にとって、その場所は先祖が迫害を受けた地区の庄屋跡で、教会を再建するのはその場所しか考えられなかった。 浦上天主堂の残骸をそのまま残せないことがわかると、長崎市は残骸の一部を移設して保存する方針を決めた。その方針によって移設されたのが、わずかに１メートル弱四方のこの壁だけだ。カトリック信者は残骸を大事にしたわけではないので、移転のための金を長崎市が十分に出せば、残骸の全体がわかるように移転することも可能だったろう。これしか移設せず、その分の金しか出さなかったということは、長崎市が残骸を保存しようとしたのが本気だったのかと疑わせる。カトリック信者の財産である浦上天主堂をどうするのかに口を出しながら、これではあきれる。
