A great overview of the history of Niigata City and its role played within the prefecture. The museum itself has quite a few exhibits showcasing the importance of the local topography and river basins, as well as its vital importance in developing outside correspondence with international trade and travel! The museum exterior is very well done, a nice mid-century classical design, and the interior is lovely marble and granite stone. The Riverwalk area around the Museum is fun to walk around and visit, especially to see some of the larger local working ships as they sit along the piers. Read moreAn interesting place to learn about Niigata’s past. The museum admission ticket is only ¥300. For travelers with kids, there is an activity area and a library on the first floor for free. After the tour in the museum, there are other historical landmarks to visit within the vicinity. This time of the year, I bumped into few locals carrying some picnic essentials so I assume, it is allowed at certain areas.
