Okok so let’s get this outta the way first. Most of us flew halfway across the world, came to a small non-touristy city just to drink American beer? Yes, yes you did, because it’s made with local resources and a great brewmaster. Great Dane is a stand alone building, almost intimidating, but go inside, check it out, try the beer. Try the beer! Try the Yuagari beer! What’s a yuagari? Google it. Then it all makes sense. I’ve been to a ton of breweries worldwide and this one is definitely one of the most unique. Drinking beer with a forested mountain backdrop on one side and a river on the other? Amazing. I’m gonna say the beer tastes cleaner just because the local water is (likely) cleaner. I got the Great Lager, Yuagari Pilsner and a brat. Solid choices. I do wish they had some Japanese snack/food options as everything is American or Euro inspired. Oh yea the scotch ale is solid but strong if you’re into that too! Ask for a taster if you aren’t sure, they do offer that (just not advertised). If you get a chance check...
Read moreWow, what a great space. I came up here from central Sendai because I have strong ties to Madison and wanted to check his place out. Both the production facility and the restaurant are massive, with room to grow (seriously, they could put a beer garden and or campground out back).
It's a beautiful space with tables of varying sizes. The upstairs space seems like it would be good for events. Servers were all friendly and helpful. Prices were very reasonable.
I had the brat and the mac&cheese and both were very good. Everything on the menu sounded tasty, so I was sad that it was just me, or I totally would have gone for the fried cheese curds. Beers were good. I had the Hazy and the Azacca, and the brewer gave me a lager to go.
They also have a lot of attractive merch, but none of it was specific to this location, so I wasn't tempted to buy any.
If you're not staying in Akiu, the brewery is pretty easy to reach via hourly buses from near Sendai station (the Sendai...
Read moreGreat brews and delicious food! Over two days, I had their bratwurst, cheese curds, Mac n Cheese and a BBQ pulled pork sandwich. Their main attraction though was the beer. I had the scotch ale (like 4 of them 😂), the dopplebock (my favorite of their current taps), the porter, and the owners gave me a sample of one of their soon to be released barrel aged beers 🤤. All were reasonably priced and very well made.
I also great to chat with the ownership group about their origin story. The Great Dane Pub and Brewery is an establishment in Madison (my hometown) that has been in the craft beer game before there was a craft beer game (like many of the great Wisconsin breweries). It so crazy that it’s...
