Chowaden (Reception Hall of lmperial Palace) — Attraction in Tokyo

Only the outside can be seen on the Imperial Palace tour, but if you’re fortunate to visit when there is an event on, it’s a great way to see some Japanese formality culture! I believe this site is open only twice a year, on emperor’s bday Feb23 and Jan 2 public holiday. lots of people come to pay respect to their emperor and his family. Love the fern trees on the palace ground, really...

新年、および天皇誕生日において、皇室の方々がお出ましになる宮殿。 月に数回の一般参観でも訪問可能。

横幅がとても長く、宮内庁側の坂を登って眼前に現れる宮殿の姿は圧巻。

一見すると西洋風の佇まいに見えますが、細部を見ると日本の伝統技術がしっかりと。 屋根は特に見事で、大棟や破風、屋根から垂れる鎖樋は見応えがあります。

・ベランダ 皇室の方々がお出ましになる場所で、間近で見ると以外と低いです。 山下通りに向かう際にベランダを真横から見ると、その低さが良く分かります。

・東庭 宮殿前の広場「東庭」は、小学校の校庭の2倍以上はあろうかという、広大な面積。

・南庭 二重橋側の宮殿方面からは「南庭」と呼ばれる庭を望めます。 小高い丘に木々が連なり、さながら山のよう。 目を凝らすと「伏見櫓」の頭部分が見えます。

・松の塔 宮内庁側にある「松の塔」も見事。 下から見上げると高さが良く分かります。

・車寄 一般参観では北と南、両方の車寄を見られます。 こちらも西洋風の入り口でありながら、軒や鎖樋などの日本家屋の意匠が施されています。
