Having travelled to Japan for holidays for over 20 years, we had never stayed at a ryokan before. My wife was particularly excited to experience a traditional Japanese inn for the first time. Here’s our take on Omiya Ryokan: The Good Authentic Atmosphere The ryokan is beautifully furnished with wood and tatami flooring, providing a cozy and traditional Japanese ambiance. Scenic Location Perched on a slightly elevated hill, it is conveniently located right in front of a Shinto shrine. 24-Hour Onsen The onsen is small but clean and open 24/7. The male and female baths switch during the day, offering variety. Extras Some days we were served amazing fruits and made us happy like small kids getting candies though it wasn’t consistent. The Bad Lack of Information There’s insufficient guidance for foreign tourists. For example: - While the website mentions a shuttle bus to and from Yamagata Station, this was not communicated at the ryokan itself. - Guests can apparently use the onsen at sister hotels, but this was never explained during check-in. Service Quality While Japanese hospitality is usually exceptional, Omiya’s service fell short. The ryokan seemed understaffed: - Some staff members lacked the expected politeness, though the ladies were generally more courteous. One male staff member stood out with a particularly unenthusiastic attitude. - Assistance with luggage upon checkout would have been appreciated, especially as the entrance involves a slight slope. Internet Free Wi-Fi is available but virtually unusable. It might be fine for those with minimal internet needs, but anyone requiring a reliable connection will be frustrated. Overall We truly enjoyed Zao Onsen as a destination, it’s a refreshing change. However, while the ryokan’s traditional setting was charming, the lack of clear communication, poor service, and poor internet connectivity detracted us from the experience. We would visit Zao Onsen again, but we’ll choose a different ryokan next time.

NON-JAPANESE RESIDENTS BEWARE I just checked in and this place gets an automatic 1 star for asking to copy my residence card. That is illegal to request from non-Japanese residents and is something that any respectable hotel should know by now (foreign tourists, on the other hand, must allow their passport to be copied). After explaining this to the staff and manager, the woman at the front got passive aggressive and immediately became rude, as if it is my fault that she doesn’t know the law… Get it together, Omiya. I’m already disappointed and I have only just started my stay. Update: WiFi is extremely slow. Can barely watch YouTube without extreme buffering… Update 2: Cannot stream anything. I guess I’ll just complain on Google then go to bed.

Our time at Omiya Ryokan was fantastic. We stayed in a western style room (which was very spacious), and the bed and amenities were very comfortable. The Ryokan itself is huge and beautiful, we found walking the halls wearing a yukata a really fun and relaxing experience after hitting the slopes (which are very close by). The food here was a real highlight, with carefully crafted dishes every morning and night that served as a showcase for locally exquisite cuisine. All of the staff were so lovey. The hotel onsen is also great, but on some days was too hot to enter and we had to return later after the temperature was adjusted. There are also other nearby public onsen, including just outside the front. Highly recommend a few days here.

Terrible Experience, Avoid this Hotel I recently had the unfortunate experience of staying at this hotel, and I must say it was one of the worst hotel stays I've ever had. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that this hotel was far from satisfactory. The service was disappointing. The female staff at the front desk seemed uninterested and lacked any warmth or hospitality. When I approached them with a concern about the room's condition, they brushed me off and made no effort to address the issue. It was as if they couldn't care less about their guests' comfort or satisfaction. The onsen area was dirty and neglected, with broken lounge chairs and an overpowering smell of chlorine. The suffer flavor from the onsen made me can’t sleep. Even the location of the hotel left much to be desired. It has so much stairs and no elevator that you need to carry all your luggage’s by hands , far away from any attractions or conveniences, and there were limited dining options nearby. The lack of cleanliness, poor service, and onsen made for an uncomfortable and unpleasant experience. I would strongly advise anyone considering this hotel to look elsewhere for accommodations. There are certainly better options available in the area that offer a higher level of quality and customer service.

Can’t wait to go back. As a tourist, going to an Ryokan was an amazing experience. It was what I was looking when I think of traditional Japan. They provide traditional robes that are encouraged to wear at dinner and breakfast. The meals were astonishing and plentiful. Harada provided excellent service and really made a fun and positive impact in my stay. Keep in mind the hotel bath is a Ryokan style. We were not fully aware of what that meant but was an interesting concept that I’m glad I got to try.

I visited omiya ryokan in the early autumn season when it was not crowded. I pre-ordered the breakfast, I thought it would be small meal but no, it turned out to be a huge and super delicious one with local ingredients and local cuisine with a lot of veggies and mushrooms. The room is a beautiful ryokan style with tatami mat and private toilet. There is also shared toilet in the common room. There is no bathroom in my room but we were able to use the onsen 24hr.
